4Goals of Scan-SHS Project
Offer a viable healthcare training program for
healthcare practitioners in rural Tamilnadu, to
improve skills in fetal imaging for early
detection of fetal abnormalities like NTDs,
Abdominal wall defects, IUGR etc. Offer a
blended training mechanism that would allow the
medical officers at the primary health center to
interact with experts and gain skills over a
period of time. System of Audit for continuous
evaluation of skill levels. Specialists remotely
assess the performance of the medical officer and
provide feedback. Sms Alerts when anomalies are
detected for specialist intervention and
management Demonstrate and validate the skills
acquired. Sophisticated software analysing
performance and suggesting areas of improvement.
The project shall result in reduction of
perinatal mortality

5Challenges
Ultrasound availability in all PHCs /
Government Hospitals Lack of training under
utilization No accreditation for those
performing ultrasound hence lack of confidence in
reporting Doctors working at primary level to be
trained in a specialty in a short time Imparting
theoretical skills and training in a standardized
fashion Geographically dispersed
locations Periodic audit and a verifiable
training program
Low Skill Levels, Geographically spread,
Standardisation

7The Scan-SHS Approach
Step 1 Identification of the PHCs, List of
doctors and Pre-test Step 2 Orientation
session for all doctors/trainers for 2 days Step
3 Doctors take online theoretical course
(http//www.sonoedu.com) Step 4 Hands on
training by accredited trainers in each district
Installation of specialized software for
ultrasound reporting and training on use of
software Step 5 Online audit of Images and
reports by specialists Periodic Evaluation and
Feedback
The project shall result in reduction in
perinatal mortality

20Scan SHS Audit Enabled Education
First of its kind education program for
healthcare practitioners to improve their skills
in fetal imaging and early detection of fetal
anomalies Continuous assessment, periodic
feedback and mentoring by experts has helped
develop a talent pool in the primary health
centers, which in turn can be leveraged for
further capacity building Capacity building and
skill development through appropriate use of
technology can significantly improve the quality
of healthcare delivery especially in rural India
where there is a huge scarcity of specialised
practitioners
Effective use of Technology for capacity building
