Step 1 The woman is given hormone treatments
to simulate egg production Spontaneously a
cycling woman will ovulate only one egg each
month. To increase the chance of obtaining
pregnancy, an effort is made to recruit as many
eggs as possible. This goal is achieved by
fertility drugs. The growth and development of
the eggs is closely monitored by repeated
ultrasound studies and blood tests for hormone
levels. Based on the information obtained from
these tests, the optimal timing for ovulation is
determined.

Step 2 Multiple eggs are taken from the
womans ovaries  
Step 3 In the lab, the eggs are mixed with the
mans sperm cells in a culture dish to become
fertilized

Step 4 The fertilized eggs, or embryos are
places in an incubator for about 48 hours.

Step 5 Embryos are implanted in the womans
uterus or frozen for future implanting.
