Economic Credentialing - Abuse of Peer Review?
  • William Mack Copeland

Description
  • This program will review the concept
of economic credentialing, including the American
Medical Association's opposition to it, as well
as several other professional associations who
object to using economic criteria in the
peer-review process. We will review the position
taken by the Federal Department of Health and
Human Services, Office of The Inspector General
review of the concept. The program will conduct
an in-depth review of several cases in which
economic credentialing has been a prime
consideration. Finally, the program will review
the projected future on economic credentialing.
  • Recent cases indicate that economic
credentialing is a potential minefield for
hospitals considering its use in their
    credentialing decisions. There has been
significant opposition to the concept from the
American Medical Association as well as several
    other physician professional associations. Given
the recent trend of hospitals and health systems
    purchasing and/or affiliating with physician
practices, it would appear that economic
credentialing will only increase in the future.
