Title: In the Teeth of Jaws- Interview codes and conventions

1
In the Teeth of Jaws
  • Codes and Conventions of Interviews

2
Framing
The framing of the interviewee is always framed
to the left or right of the screen. Also the
shot type is close up, medium close up or
sometimes big close up is used when some
documentaries dont use a relevant background so
fill the screen up with the interviewees face.
3
Background
Mise-en-scene The background behind the
interviewee is relevant to what they're talking
about or to anchor their position and relevance
to the topic. Documentaries either use a green
screen or pictures to do this. For this they
have used the cover of the film Jaws for the
background which is relevant to the documentary
and the interviewee as he directed the film.
4
Graphics
For the graphics, usually there is text layered
over the interviewee. There are two lines the
first line is the name of the person on the
screen and the second line anchors their topic or
their relevance to the documentary. The first
line is always in a larger font and different
colour so it stands out with the second line
smaller.
5
Cut Away
When creating interviews the questions have to be
removed leaving a jump in-between each
interviewees answer. So to avoid this a cut away
is used which is always relevant to the question
they have just answered. Here there is an
archive which is relevant to the film.
