Mobile Phones can be Charged with Music
Its not new for researchers and experts to think
out of the box maybe hence they are called
researchers and experts. Once again something
innovate has been developed by the QMUL team
researchers.
Last year the QMUL team researchers found out
that the solar cells performance can be enhanced
by playing rock or pop music. Further developing
the research, Microsoft with the Queen Mary
University of London (QMUL) scientists team
created an energy-harvesting prototype, a
nanogenerator that could charge a mobile phone
with the ubiquitous background noise like that of
music, traffic noise and our own voice.

For the necessary component of the device,
nanorod to be manufactured the team used zinc
oxide. Being a piezoelectric substance, Zinc
oxide when squashed or stretched creates a
voltage which is got by converting mechanical
energy or energy from motion into electrical
energy. Since the piezoelectric substances are
crystalline in structure they get this ability
and by coating zinc oxide on different surfaces
at different places energy-harvesting can be made
adaptable.

Generally gold is the metal that is used as an
electrical contact. However, the team toiled in
getting an innovative way of using aluminum foil
which is cheap rather than gold that is costly.
In this regard the process created by the
researchers is to spray on a plastic sheet with a
layer of zinc oxide. The plastic sheet thus
sprayed was put into a chemical mixture which was
then heated up to 90 C. The nanorods with this
heating are caused to grow on the surface of the
sheet.

In order to cut the cost involved in production
process, the two above innovative methods of
coating a plastic sheet with zinc oxide and using
aluminum foil were taken over. With all these
efforts the final result was the device
generating 5 V which is more than enough to
charge a mobile phone.
