Dont lose your sponsorship! (15 January 2014)
  • Did you know that you are required to meet the
    1 expenditure on training to retain and renew
    your Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS)? When
    its time to renew you must demonstrate that you
    have met this requirement. The requirement is the
    equivalent of 1 of the annual gross wages paid
    to your workforce. This figure is to be spent on
    training of your Australian citizen or permanent
    resident employees.
  • One of the easiest and best ways to meet this
    requirement is through the use of trainees or
    apprentices. 100 of their wages and any
    expenses, such as an outside vendor which
    provides or manages your trainee/apprentice
    program qualify to meet this requirement.
    Certificate or ticket programs meet this
    requirement. Buying new software or equipment
    this year? Is training included? Make sure your
    vendor separately invoices the cost and fee
    associated with the training! If they include it
    in the price of the software or equipment, it
    cannot be counted as a training expense. A couple

  • Even newly formed companies with less than 1 year
    in business can obtain a sponsorship.
  • Accredited Sponsorship-this is an option for
    firms meeting the following requirements
    previously on a 3 year SBS, turnover of gt4
    million each of the last 3 years, 75 of staff
    are Australians or permanent residents and had at
    least 30 457 visas issued in the last 12 months.
    You must also be in good standing with DIBP!
  • Under the new requirements put into place July 1
    of last year, you now must provide DIBP with the
    number of workers you plan to hire during the 3
    year period of the Standard Business Sponsorship.
    Remember to account for hires that have to be
    replaced during the time period, room for
    expansion etc. There is no reason not to be
    ambitious, as if DIBP disagrees with your
    projection it will not cause your application to
    be denied.
  • You can retain your existing overseas workers
    after your current sponsorship expires, you just
    cannot add anymore without renewing it.
  • Overseas firms doing business in Australia can
    also obtain sponsorship-if you have an overseas
    business partner that needs this, let us know!
