Causes, Symptoms and Treatments of Piles-
Seow-Choen Colorectal Centre Pte Ltd
2
What are piles all about?
  • Piles, medically known as hemorrhoids are
enlarged and swollen blood vessels that become
inflamed and are found in the anal canal. They
blood vessels appear in the form of masses and
contain support tissues and elastic fibers. Piles
are normally associated with pain and bleeding
    while defecating.

3
Where do piles develop?
  • Hemorrhoids are seen to develop internally or
    externally.
  • Internal piles occur inside the anus and external
piles that occur outside the anus.
  • Typically, internal piles are found from 2 to 4cm
above the opening of the anus.
  • External piles also known as perianal hematoma
occur on the outside edge of the anus.
  • People are commonly seen to suffer from the
    internal ones.

4
What are the different types of piles?
  • First degree piles These are internal piles that
cause bleeding but do not prolapse
  • Second degree piles These are piles that
prolapse during bowel movement but reduce
    spontaneously
  • Third degree piles These are piles that are
always outside of the bottom and it is possible
    to push them back
  • Fourth degree piles One of the most chronic
cases where piles are permanently prolapsed and
    cannot be reduced

5
What are the signs and symptoms of piles?
  • In most cases hemorrhoids are not serious and go
away on their own after a few days. Following are
    the symptoms of piles
  • A solid lump may be felt around the anus. It
consists of coagulated blood, called a thrombosed
external hemorrhoid. This can be painful.
  • After going to the toilet, there might be a
feeling that the bowels are still full

6
  • 3. Bright red blood will appear after a bowel
    movement
  • 4. Itchiness around the anus
  • 5. Mucus discharge when emptying the bowels
  • 6. Pain while defecating
  • 7. The area around the anus may be red and sore

7
What are the causes of this disease?
  • The blood vessels present around the anus and
rectum will stretch under pressure and may swell
    or form lumps.
  • Inflamed veins can develop when pressure
    increases in the lower rectum.
  • This may occur due to
  • Severe constipation
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Pregnancy

8
  • Lifting heavy weights
  • 5. Straining when passing a stool

9
What are the treatment options for piles?
  • 1. Laxatives for constipation
  • 2. Hemorrhoid creams and ointments
  • 3. Warm baths
  • 4. Drinking lots of water
  • 5. Cold compresses (a cold water soaked cloth or
    flannel)
  • 6. Include lot of fiber in your diet
  • 7. In severe case, the patient might have to
    undergo a surgery

10
  • For treating piles, you need to look for good
clinics that offer hemorrhoid treatments at cost
