The IHC Mogul and Titan Tractors!
The 1902 merger of the two major predecessor
companies (McCormick and Deering) into IHC
allowed farm tractor production to continue about
the same as before the merger. That is, the
former McCormick Harvesting Machine Company's
facilities were used to produce what became known
as the Mogul tractors, and the former Deering
Harvester Machine Company's facilities were used
to produce what became known as the Titan
tractors. This division also extended down to
separate dealerships for the Mogul and Titan
tractors, all of which seemed to be acceptable at
the time of the merger since the operations of
both divisions were very competitive prior to the
1902 merger into IHC.

IHC, McCormick-Deering, McCormick and Farmall
Tractors Built by IHC From 1917 to 1953!
The production of separate Mogul and Titan farm
tractors ended in 1918 due to an anti-trust
lawsuit ruling against IHC. This also started
IHC's trend toward the production of less
expensive, smaller tractors for small farm
operations and the introduction of IHC's popular
row crop Farmall series of tractors.

The Success of IHC's Farm Tractor Production!
Over the years, Farm Tractor production of IHC
continued to grow. In 1926, IHC's Farmall Works
began production in a new plant in Rock Island,
Illinois, built solely to produce the new Farmall
tractor. The Farmall Era was termed as the
Golden Years of IHC. By 1930, the 100,000th
Farmall was produced. From 1924 until 1963
Farmalls were the largest selling row crop
tractor, and in 1974, the Rock Island Farmall
plant produced IHC's 5,000,000th tractor, a feat
never before accomplished by a farm tractor
manufacturer. By the late 1930s, IHC set its
sights on introducing a true general-purpose
tractor designed to satisfy the needs of the
average US family farmer. The resulting letter
series of Raymond Loewy-designed Farmall tractors
came out in 1939 and proved a huge success. In
fact, the Farmall H (1939-1952), became the
second best selling of all time (over 390,000
sold) in North America. Only the Ford 8N (due to
its exclusive Ferguson Three Point Hitch System)
was a better seller.
126
The Downfall of IHC's Farm Tractor Production!
IHC continued its sales lead in farm tractors
and related equipment through much of the 1940s
and 1950s, despite strong competition from Ford,
John Deere and other tractor manufacturers.
Through the 1960s and 1970s sales were good, but
profit margins remained slim which was attributed
to the continual adding of unrelated business
lines and poor management within IHC's corporate
structure. A big contributing factor to IHC's
downfall in the mid 1980's was the 1959 recall of
the Farmall 460, 560, and 660 tractors due to
breakdowns in the field. This recall did nothing
but reduce consumer confidence in IHC farm
tractors. The recall was due to a costly IHC
engineering mistake not to upgrade its final
tractor drive design beyond its 1939 technology,
causing rear end failures from the new more
powerful 6 cylinder engines it introduced in
those tractor models. The continued strain of
cash being short, labor-union problems, new and
more costly work and labor force regulations, and
the poor economy finally led to the bitter end
for the Agricultural Division of IHC in the late
1980s. It was then sold to the J. I. Case
Company Division of Tenneco. IHC called it the
bitter end but the newly formed Case IH
Company used the new tractor innovations IHC
already had on its drawing boards, and introduced
the Case IH Magnum Farm Tractors in 1987. In
2012, Case IH celebrated its 25th Anniversary of
producing Case IH Magnum farm tractors.

CASE IH CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF MAGNUM TRACTOR
LEADERSHIP
RACINE, Wis. ? The introduction of the Case IH
Magnum tractor in 1987 marked a major milestone.
The 1988 model year Magnum tractor was the first
designed and produced after the birth of Case IH
the result of J.I. Case and International
Harvester coming together. Since then, Case IH
Magnum Series tractors have delivered
producer-driven, proven technology thats helped
producers Be Ready for 25 years. The Magnum
Series tractor has set the industry standard as
the most powerful and productive row-crop
tractor, says Dan Klein, Case IH Marketing
Manager for Magnum tractors. These tractors
introduced the red paint that has become the
signature of the Case IH brand. Their
cab-forward design and fully integrated
mechanical front-wheel drive (MFD) were examples
of International Harvesters reputation of
innovative leadership. It let customers know
that this new company was off to the right start.
