A History of Wallis and Massey-Harris Farm
Tractors! A Lyle V. Johnson Production June

2
The History of Wallis Farm Tractors! The Wallis
Tractors were built from 1902 until 1932,
primarily in Racine, Wisconsin by the J. I. Case
Plow Works (a different company than Case
Threshing Machine, which would have built the
Case brand of tractors). Wallis Tractors was
founded by Henry Wallis, the son-in-law of Jerome
I. Case. Henry Wallis was also the president of
the Case Plow Works, which had been founded by J.
I. Case. Early work on the Wallis tractor
dates back to 1902 and some assembly in
Cleveland, Ohio, but the company was formally
organized in Racine, Wisconsin in 1912.
Wallis Tractors were built and sold by the
Case Plow Works. In 1928, Case Plow Works was
sold to Massey-Harris, and Massey took over the
production of Wallis tractors (also at this time,
full rights to the Case name were sold to Case
Threshing Machine). Massey-Harris continued to
use the Wallis brand until 1932, when the
Massey-Harris name replaced it.

The Massey-Harris Brand of Farm Tractors! The
Massey-Harris Company was originally formed in
1891, as a merger of the Massey Manufacturing
Company of Toronto, Canada, and the A. Harris
Son Company Ltd., both of Ontario, Canada.
Both of these companies had on their own been
industry leaders in the production of farm
implements and harvesting machinery in Canada.
They introduced the Wallis 12-20-model tractor
in 1929. This tractor was the basis for the
"Pacemaker" which was first produced in 1936. The
"Challenger" was their first row-crop tractor.
Both models were available on steel or with
rubber tires. In 1953, Massey-Harris merged
with Ferguson, after Harry Ferguson had split
from Ford, to form the Massey-Ferguson. In 1994,
AGCO purchased Massey-Ferguson and continues to
use the name Massey-Ferguson as one of its
several brands of farm tractors.
