Surgical Dermatology
Get tips on how to achieve healthy, smooth and
soft skin that radiates good health. Just a few
minutes each day can make all the difference.
For your added convenience and to offer a more
cost-effective treatment option, patients needing
surgical dermatology procedures can actually have
them performed right here in our office. Patients
will find a sterile, safe, and relaxing
environment for surgical procedures to be done
efficiently. Our surgical services include the
following
SKIN CANCER EXCISION
Some non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal
cell and squamous cell carcinomas, may be removed
using a standard excision. This procedure removes
the skin cancer as well as a small portion of the
healthy tissue surrounding it. The area is then
closed using stitches or, if the incision is
large, a flap or skin graph.
CYST LIPOMA EXCISION
Cysts are small closed sacs that contain fluid or
solid material. They may be surgically removed to
avoid problems such as inflammation and
infection, or to improve cosmetic appearance.
Lipomas differ from cysts in that they are
primary composed of soft, fatty tissue. Lipomas
are typically benign, easily movable and
painless. Both cysts and lipomas may be
surgically removed to avoid problems such as
inflammation and infection, or to improve
cosmetic appearance

MOLE REMOVAL
Moles are normally harmless and quite common for
most skin. These growths are usually tan or brown
in color, sometimes raised, and come in a variety
of shapes and sizes. Over time, some moles may
change, becoming lighter in color, or bigger.
Another treatment is to remove your mole by
surgical excision or shave excision to stop
irritation, to improve appearance, or to prevent
the mole from becoming cancerous. A change in a
mole can indicate a serious problem. If you have
a mole that has become larger, changed color, is
asymmetric, seems to have developed an irregular
border, itches, crusts, bleeds, or is painful,
consult Dr. Peterson immediately.
WART REMOVAL
Warts are growths of thick layers of skin that
are caused by a virus. People of all ages may
develop warts anywhere on the skin with varying
degrees of discomfort. Warts may be removed by
cryosurgery, curettage, electro surgery,
injections with chemicals, or laser surgery.
ACNE SCAR REDUCTION
This procedure can typically improve the way
scars look by changing the size, depth, or color.
However, no scar can ever be completely erased,
and no technique will return the scar to its
normal uninjured appearance. Patients are
pleasantly surprised by how much smoother and
lighter their skin looks after an acne scar
reduction. Dr. Peterson will suggest the best
approach after an examination.

Dermatopathology

soft skin that radiates good health. Just a few

What is Dermatopathology?
Der-mato-pathology is the microscopic examination
and diagnosis of skin disorders.? A
dermatopathologist is a highly trained physician
who specializes in diagnosing skin diseases by
looking through a microscope.
When a dermatologist elects to do a skin biopsy
it is because they are unsure of the diagnosis or
they want to understand the growth pattern of a
particular skin cancer to determine the best
surgical approach. The accurate microscopic
interpretation of the biopsy is important and it
is best to have someone who understands both the
clinical and pathological side of the skin
diseases.
Dr. Michael W. Peterson is double board certified
in dermatology and dermatopathology and examines
biopsy and excisional specimens from many
dermatologists and providers in the valley.
Dermatopathologists provide a personal,
consultative service to dermatologists, which
includes analyzing your medical information in
conjunction with observations through the
microscope. The ultimate goal is to provide the
best possible care for the patient.

Dry Skin
If your skin has a strong tendency toward
dehydration, lacks oil, and has few breakouts if
any at all, it is considered dry. In more extreme
cases, dry skin lacks elasticity and can be
extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold
temperatures. Wash your face once a day with a
rich, creamy cleanser and warm water.
Treatment Tip Rinse with warm water and pat your
skin dry. Use toner to help with that tight and
flaky feeling of dehydration. Avoid toners and
makeup that contain alcohol as alcohol-based
products have a drying effect on skin. Use a
cream-based lotion to hydrate your skin and keep
it rejuvenated.
Oily Skin
If your skin is oily, it usually has a lot of
shine to it very soon after cleansing and the
pores are generally slightly enlarged. It is more
prone to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads than
other skin types and is coarser in texture.
Treatment Your skin tends to attract more dirt
than dry skin, so wash your face twice a day with
a gentle non-foaming cleanser and warm water.
Rinse with warm water. Use an alcohol-free,
hydrating toner to help remove additional
residue. Oil blotting sheets through out the day
can help control shine, and it takes as little as
3 minutes after lunch. Although your skin's oily,
you still must moisturize it with a light
moisturizer daily, or your skin will become dry
underneath and overcompensate by producing more
oil.

Normal Skin
Some consider normal skin to be combination skin,
but it is not. If your skin is oily in the "T
zone" and your nose while dry and taut on the
cheeks, it is considered normal. It's also
considered normal if it changes with seasons
(dryer in winter, oilier in summer). Normal skins
can also be 'Normal-To's' as in normal to oily or
normal to dry.
Treatment Wash your face with cleansers that are
designed for your normal/normal-to skin type.
Wipe an alcohol free, hydrating toner all over
the face. Apply moisturizer more frequently to
dry skin
Combination Skin
Combination skin is comprised of two extreme skin
types on one face. These situations occur when
there is acne and a lot of oil in one area when
the rest of the skin is generally dry (no oil).
Two common examples are dry skin with papular and
pustular acne on the cheeks or a normal skin with
inflamed papular and pustular acne in the chin
and mouth area.
Treatment Tend to each area appropriately as
described above. If the acne is severe, consult a
dermatologist or esthetician

Sensitive Skin
Please note that you may have sensitive skin and
normal, oily, or dry. If your skin has allergic
reactions to beauty products and is usually
sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold weather, it
is sensitive. Sensitivity can show up in rash,
redness, inflammation, acne, and dilated
capillaries.
Treatment Look for cleansers, toners, makeup,
and moisturizers that are fragrance-free and
hypoallergenic. Cleanse, tone and moisturize with
gentle products everyday. The idea for your skin
is to always choose products with a soothing
benefit. Some common ingredients to look for are
chamomile, azulene, bisabolol, allantoin,
lavender, camphor, calamine, rosemary, thyme,
aloe vera, coconut oil etc.
TIPS
  • Oil blotting sheets can help absorb oil through
the day so you are not tempted to re-apply powder
or foundation, or overwash your face.
  • Avoid stretching or pulling on the delicate skin
near your eyes when putting on creams or
cosmetics. This delicate area shows age markings
like wrinkles much sooner than it should when
subjected to too much rough handling.
  • Avoid touching your skin with high force or avoid
scratching your skin as much as possible
