Devi Shailputri in ancient Greece
  • Aspects of Goddess Shailputri, or the
Daughter of the Mountain, or Uma, were present in
the ancient Greek-Roman tradition's depictions of
the Goddess Cybele. Like Goddess Durga, Cybele
    was associated with mountains (Pahada-waali),
    hawks and lions (Sherawali).
  • She was often depicted riding a chariot or
rath driven by lions like Goddess Durga. Cybele
was dear to eunuch and trans-gendered people
(hijras) like Mahashakti Renuka in the Hindu
tradition. Mother Cybele was also known as
    'Mother of the mountain.

Maa Brahmacharini   - the Virgin Goddess, in
the Roman world
  • Bramhacharini, the form of Sati before she
wed Lord Shiva is worshipped on the second day of
Navratri.Virgin goddesses have existed since time
immemorial in the various spiritual traditions in
the world. Vesta is the virgin goddess of the
hearth, home, and family in Roman religion.
Vesta's presence is symbolized by the sacred fire
that burned at her hearth and temples. Virgin
goddesses in other spiritual traditions include
Anat, Artemis, Astraea (mythology), Athena, Bona
    Dea and Britomartis.

Maa Chandraghanta, the one with the moon, in
Greece
  • After her marriage to Lord Shiva, Goddess
Mahagauri (Parvati) began to wear half Chandra on
her forehead and acquired the name Goddess
    Chandraghanta. Devi Chandraghanta is worshipped
on the third day of Navratri. Greek mythology
has Selene, the daughter of the Titans Hyperion
and Theia, who is the ruler of the moon. Selene
drives her moon chariot across the heavens, and
wears the moon on her head like Chandraghanta.

Fourth Day Varad Vinayak Chaturthi and Lalit
Panchami
  • The radiance of a hundred thousand suns is
contained in Maa Kushmanda. Her brilliance is
incomparable. She resides deep within the heart
of the sun where no other god or goddess can
    withstand the brilliance and heat.

Mata Kushmanda and Welsh Goddess Olwen
  • Maa Kushmanda, is worshiped on fourth day
during Durga Pooja during the Navratris. She is
said to be the power that gives the Sun its power
to nourish. Her abode is at the centre of the
Sun. Kushmanda is the one who begins the cycle of
creation by creating the anda or egg-shaped
universe which grows and expands till
pralaya. The Welsh Goddess Olwen, who is the
patron of the arts, creativity, excellence and
the sun. Her symbols are late-blooming flowers,
red and gold items and rings.  She is also called
the Golden Wheel, which signifies the wheel of
creation and dissolution, or the beginning of
the cycle of the world. She is thus close to the
    depictions of Kushmanda

Skanda Mata and Mother Yemaya in the Nigerian
tradition
  • Skandamata is Goddess Parvati in her role
as mother of Lord Skanda or Kartikeya.  As Mata
Rani is in her maternal aspect in this
manifestation, she is believed to be extremely
beneficent to devotees who seek her as
Skandamata. Probably the best known depiction of
the Divine Feminine as Mother comes to us in the
form of the depictions of Mother Mary with Jesus
    among others.
  • The role of Supreme Mother in the Yoruba
tradition of Nigeria is fulfilled by Yemaya.
Yemaya is the ocean, the essence of motherhood,
and a fierce protector of children. Yemaya is
said to be the mother of all Gods in the Nigerian
    IFA tradition.

Durga Katyayani and Isis the great goddess of
Egypt
  • Katyayini, the sixth amongst the
Navadurgas, has close parallels with Isis the
ancient Egyptian goddess. Karyayini is a fierce
protector of devotees who does not merely destroy
their enemies without but also burns to ashes
qualities like ignorance, anger and greed that
come in the way a devotees spiritual growth.
  • Isis is like Katyayini a Goddess of
magic and the power behind mantras and
incantations. Just as Katyayaini is called
mantrini, Isis was known as the Lady of the Words
    of Power.

Mata Kalratri The ruler of the dead Hel or
Hela
  • Maa Kala Ratri is the seventh among the
Navadurga. Kalaratri is the one of the fiercest
forms of Durga who destroys all demons. Kaal
Ratri is terrifying because she is death itself.
Kaal means time. Ratri is night. The dark unknown
period before we are born and the dark unknown
that we return to is Kaalratri.  Mata Kalratri
was present in old European Norse mythology as
Hel or Hela, the goddess of the dead and queen of
underworld. She can cause disease, decay and
death. She, like Kaalratri does not merely
represent death but is death itself.

Mata Maha Gauri The Holy Wife
  • Mata Mahagauri the eight manifestation among
the Navadurgas,  has several parallels with
Goddess Oshun in the Yoruba tradition. Orisha,
like Mahagauri grants love, intimacy, beauty,
wealth and diplomacy to her devotees. ??hun is
beneficent, generous and very kind but like
Mahagauri she has a great temper for those who
threaten or pose a danger to her children. Oshun
is Shango, god of lightning and thunder who loves
drums like Lord Shambhu loves his damaru-drum in
    the Hindu tradition.
