  • A developmental disorder characterised in
    children by extreme behaviour, such as
    impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattentiveness

The Statistics
  • Approximately 5 of UK children have ADHD -
    meaning in an average class of 30 pupils 1-2
    would have ADHD
  • The ratio of boys to girls is 41
  • Research shows that ADHD occurs in up to 25 of
    children whose parents have the condition
  • 50 of children with ADHD display emotional
    problems and show severe problems with developing
    social skills.
  • 90 of children with ADHD underachieve
    academically in school

How can the whole school help?
  • A clear and fair reward system
  • Use of the traffic light system
  • A good support network for teachers within
    the school
  • Clear structure and routine throughout the day

Conclusion
  • We must remember that for any effective behaviour
    management strategies to be effective they must
    be consistent, repetitive and fair.
  • Kirby and Kirby (1994) stress that because
    individuals with ADHD often receive a
    substantial amount of negative feedback, it is
    important to structure the school day so that the
    chance for successful and positive feedback is
    increased.
