What Global Warming means for the North East
and
what you can do about it
2
Overview
  • The Earth is Warming
  • We can see it
  • There are solutions
  • We are a solution

7
Our Lifetimes
  • Warming of 3.5-10.5 degrees F
  • Low end impacts serious but manageable
  • High end impacts catastrophic

8
Clear Impacts 1º F degree warming
9
Local Impacts
  • When are we like South Carolina?
  • More mild to tropical diseases and invasive
    species
  • More irregular precipitation more droughts and
    more floods!

10
Catastrophic Impacts
  • Ecosystem Collapse and mass extinction
  • Thermohaline shutdown unknown but likely chaotic
    impacts (Think Day After Tomorrow!)
  • Ocean acidification potential collapse of marine
    foodchains
  • Methane release from tundra or ocean clathrates

  • could initiate very rapid warming
  • Continental Ice Sheet Collapse sea level rise of
    35-40 feet

11
Ice is just water...
  • Positive Feedback
  • Faster than we thought
  • There's a lot of ice!

The Experts
How far can it go? The last time the world was
three degrees warmer than today which is what
we expect later this century sea levels were
25m higher. So that is what we can look forward
to if we don't act soonI think sea-level rise
is going to be the big issue soon, more even than
warming itself
How long have we got? We have to stabilize
emissions of carbon dioxide within a decade, or
temperatures will warm by more than one degree.
That will be warmer than it has been for half a
million years, and many things could become
unstoppable. We don't have much time left.

Living Together
  • Local Economy
  • Security
  • People
  • There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We

Power
  • There are two kinds of power in this world
money and people. Just because we don't have
money doesn't mean we aren't powerless.
  • Never doubt that a small group of motivated
people can change the world. Indeed, its the
only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead,
    Anthropologist

Campus Climate Challenge
Youth across the US and Canada are running and
