OBJECTIVES
  • To determine the prevalence of congenital heart
    diseases (CHD) among the hospitalized neonates in
    a referral tertiary care hospital.

METHODS
  • All the neonates with confirmed diagnosis of
    congenital heart diseases by echocardiography
    were evaluated during a four year study
    period.Initial data including gender, age, type
    of congenital heart diseases , family history,
    consanguinity and associated anomaly were
    recorded from medical files.

RESULTS
  • The prevalence of CHD among 2840 hospitalized
    neonates was 1.6 (46 cases).Of the 46 cases of
    CHD 20 cases(43.5) were in females and 26 cases
    (56.5) in males.The most common types of CHD
    were ventricular septal defect(47.8), atrial
    septal defect (28.2), transposition of great
    vessels(19.5), patent ductus arteriosus(10.8)and
    tetralogy of Fallot (4.3).In 41.3 of cases
    there were a history of consanguineous
    marriages.

CONCLUSION
  • The prevalence of congenital heart diseases are
    higher than litterature especially for
    transposition of great vessels. The high rate of
    consanguineous marriage could be a causative
    factor.
