McMaster School of Biomedical Engineering
  • Established 2005.
  • Mandate Research and graduate education-training
in areas of importance for healthcare and
    biotechnology/biomedical industry.
  • Equal partnership between Faculties of
    Engineering and Health Sciences. Interface
    between engineering and life sciences.

3
Graduate programs offered
  • MASc in Biomedical Engineering
  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering

4
  • Students accepted from
  • Engineering/physical science backgrounds
  • Life science /health science backgrounds
  • Multidisciplinary student community.

Entrance RequirementsMASc
Students from Engineering Physical Sciences
backgrounds
  • 4 year degree or equivalent BSc, BEng, BASc with
B minimum average in final 2 years
  • 2 years (12 credits) university level mathematics
  • 12 credits university level physical science or
    engineering science
  • 3 credits physics, 3 credits chemistry

6
  • Also the following university level courses
  • 3 credits biology
  • 3 credits statistics
  • 6 credits physiology and/or anatomy
  • Students who have not completed these courses as
part of their undergraduate degree could do so in
their first year of graduate study (not for
    graduate credit)

7
Entrance RequirementsMAScStudents from Health
Sciences Life Sciences Backgrounds
  • 4 year BSc degree or equivalent with B minimum
in final 2 years of study
  • To include 6 credits biology, 6 credits chemistry

8
  • Also the following university level courses
  • 6 credits physics, to include continuum
    mechanics, electricity magnetism
  • 6 credits mathematics, including calculus
  • 3 credits statistics
  • Students who have not taken these courses could
do so in their first year of graduate study (not
    for graduate credit)

9
Program Requirements
  • COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum of 3 half-year graduate courses, to
    include
  • core course in biomedical engineering (modular,
covering the research areas of the School).
    Choose from 60 courses.
  • For students from health/life sciences
background, one of the 2 courses beyond the core
course must be from engineering offerings.
  • For students from an engineering background, one
of the 2 courses beyond the core course must be
    from health sciences offerings.

10
Program Requirements
  • SEMINAR REQUIREMENT
  • Students must attend all seminars in the
    Biomedical Engineering Program seminar series.
  • They must present one seminar on the research
they have carried out while enrolled in the
    program.
  • Students will be encouraged to present their
research at appropriate conferences in Canada
internationally. Faculty support of students for
    this purpose will be encouraged.

11
Thesis Requirement
  • Students must complete a thesis embodying results
of their research. Thesis to be examined by a
committee of faculty members appointed by the
    Director of the School.
  • Thesis to be presented and defended by the
    candidate in an oral examination.

12
Entrance RequirementsPh.D. Program
  • Candidates must hold an MSc, MASc or equivalent
  • Must have same background in life sciences
    engineering as entering Masters students
  • Students showing outstanding potential may
transfer from the Masters program without
completing the Masters degree. Must have
completed at least one year and completed the
course requirement with an average of at least B

13
Research Areas
  • Biomaterials Tissue Engineering
  • Cardiovascular, ocular materials.
  • Antibacterial bone interfacing materials.
