Outcomes
  • Understand the ultimate aim behind the
opportunities we are trying to create
  • Understand the different pathways young people
are able to access leadership, volunteering and
    coaching opportunities
  • Explore sport specific models of progression and
    understand a young persons journey
  • Receive updates on projects that are facilitating
    pathway development
  • Shape the communication of these pathways to
    young people in our network

3
Why Volunteering??? The ultimate aim is to
increase the quantity, quality and diversity of
young people engaged in volunteering and
leadership.
  • Our objectives are to develop
  • Leadership through Sport and
  • Leadership in Sport
  • The aims are to drive
  • personal change by supporting the development
    of inter-personal skills, self-confidence and a
    sense of responsibility and
  • structural change by working with key agencies
to offer broader opportunities for young people
to make a formal and valued contribution to the
    delivery of sport.

5
Background
Announced by James Purnell the Minister in
September 2007. The aim is to recruit 8,000
adult volunteers into coaching in support of the
5 Hour Offer over the coming three years. The
programme will be delivered in 70 of the most
deprived areas of the country and will aim to
provide adults with the skills and inspiration to
volunteer as a coach. It is hoped the programme
will contribute to workforce development,
encourage people from deprived areas to be active
and personally involved in their communities, as
well as developing more adult role models within
school and community sport. Step into Sport
graduates will also be targeted.
6
Background
  • RiC will be delivered jointly by Sport England
    and YST.
  • RiC in community settings will be delivered
through CSPs in partnership with NGBs and other
    local partners.
  • RiC in school settings will be delivered
    through Specialist Sports Colleges
  • In year one YST will work with Specialist
Sports Colleges to identify 91 colleges in the
    appropriate areas

7
Strength of coaching in schools
  • The 8,000 volunteer coaches will be deployed to
support sports activity by 5-19 year olds.
  • They will be deployed locally according to
    need.
  • The strength of this should be that the
coaching supports delivery across a range of
    needs in schools

8
Main objective one
  • To offer progression for graduates of the Step
    into Sport Programme
  • The first step will be a leading into coaching
    course.
  • This will build on the skills of leadership and
add the more technical role of the coach
  • On completion there will then be scholarships
to support the achievement of NGB Coaching
    courses at L1 and 2

9
Main objective two
  • To provide a way into coaching for adults
  • This will begin with a taster experience
  • Then the delivery of the Sports Leaders UK 1
    day Leadership course
  • The programme will then connect into the same
leading into coaching course progressing the
generic skills of leadership and the more
    technical role of the coach
  • On completion of the leading into coaching
course there will be scholarships to support the
achievement of NGB Coaching courses at L1 and 2

10
Other objectives
  • To build on Specialist Sports College Community
Plans that focus on the recruitment and
deployment of the local community through
    coaching
  • To develop the diversity of role models working
in school sport through the recruitment of
coaches from the local school community
  • To make a positive and useful contribution to
the delivery of the underpinning elements of the
UK Coaching Framework entry to coaching and
    pre-coach roles.

11
Leading into coaching course
The YST have begun working on the
development of a leading into coaching course
for potential coaches that builds on the
development of generic leadership skills and
develops an understanding of the coaching
process, specifically related to coaching
children and working within the school sport
context.
12
Leading into coaching
  • The proposal is to offer a lead into coaching
    course of 6 modules
  • Information on recruits

Officiating How can we create pathways for young
people to become officials?
15
Why young officials?
Year one
  • Concern about demographic of officials
  • No structure to support young people accessing
    officiating opportunities
  • Awards unappealing
  • Barriers to access
  • Limited support
  • Challenge perceptions

Image area
16
Year one partners
17
Aim and impact of year two
  • Strategically embed and raise awareness of the
young officials awards with NGB and YST networks
  • Establish and clearly communicate pathways for
young people to pursue officiating routes
  • Create a network and legacy of young official
    volunteers
  • Encourage a step change in the age profile of
    officials within 14 NGBs
  • Create a volunteer workforce that fully reflects
the demographics of the population and is
    inclusive of all
  • Inspire you people to get involved
  • Increase the awareness and importance of
    sportsmanship

The game of Boccia in both School and Community
settings will benefit from the enthusiasm and
knowledge which these Young Officials will bring
to the game. Anne Cradock (BYOA Tutor) April
2008 The best bit about the course was being
able to time-keep for my swimming club at their
championships. It allowed me to take part in the
event even though I was injured and unable to
swim. Howard (16)
21
Event Volunteering How can we create pathways
for young people to access event volunteering
opportunities?
22
Project need
  • Develop something sustainable that will have a
long term impact on event volunteering.
  • Build on one-off event volunteering experiences
young people have had through the UK School Games
    and Paralympic World Cup
  • Create a structure to support personal change for
    young people
  • Offer an alternative pathway for young leaders to
    volunteer
  • Secure medium-term funding

23
Aim and impact of event volunteering project
  • Create a network of skilled young event
    volunteers
  • Encourage a step change in the age profile of
event volunteers used by major event organisers
    and National Governing Body events
  • Create a volunteer workforce that fully reflects
the demographics of each host city
  • Inspire you people to get involved
  • Create a legacy of young event volunteers in host
    cities throughout England
  • Offer all young people involved the opportunity
to attain a BTEC level 2 award in Event Support

24
Event volunteering projectin numbers!
  • 1 Youth Sport Trust manager
