  • Obedience
  • A good quality?

When I need your opinion Ill give it to youSam
Levenson
  • Parents have the right to lead
  • Authority figures, role models
  • Respect for age
  • When the child offers a suggestion, has to wait
for parents to finish their talking.
  • When Mama would say NO to something I wanted to
do, I would use the argument that others were
doing it, so why not me?

3
  • Corporal punishment does it work? It does not
make us hate our parents, because we understand
    the dogma involved.
  • Parental responsibility, of preventive therapy,
of virtue being its own reward and evil bringing
    punishment.
  • Do we enjoy this practice? World as tough
requires tough parents and tough teachers

4
  • The fight against individual corruption was part
of the fight against the environment.
  • The moral standard of the home had to be higher
    than that of the street
  • Is it worth a quick sharp pain to be reminded of
our obligations? Author asserts it is. Better
one stabbing moment of truth at home than
    stabbing in the street

5
What does scripture say about Obedience?
  • Honor your father and your mother, so that you
may live long in the ladn the Lord your God is
    giving you. (Exodus 2012)
  • Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for
    this is right. (Ephesians 61)
  • Children, obey your parents in everything, for
this pleases the Lord. (Colossians 320)

6
  • Everyone must submit himself to the governing
authorities, for there is no authority except
that which God has established. (Romans 131)
  • Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.
Honor one another above yourselves. (Romans1210)

7
WOULD YOU OBEY HITLER?
  • Jean Reinert

8
St. Thomas Aquinas
  • St. Thomas Aquinas considers the obligation of
obedience as an obvious consequence of the
subordination established in the world by natural
    and positive law.

9
Do we obey too well?
  • Stanley Milgrim experiment
  • Drawing the line obedience v. disobedience

10
  • Even when I want to do right, I cannot.
  • Romans 718
  • ..but you will live, if by the help of Gods
Spirit you say No to your desires.
  • Romans 813
  • Desire to obey.when is obedience wrong?
  • Thou shall not kill

11
Milgrim
  • One teacher even claimed that the learner
was so dumb he deserved to get shocked.
  • obvious sense of an intense inner struggle

12
Lets talk about this
  • At what point should the line be drawn between
    morality and obedience?
  • Should people who disagree with commonly accepted
law or rules, be allowed to disobey because these
    things are against their beliefs?
  • How far would you have gone with the shock
    treatment?

13
More questions.
  • What is your opinion about obeying parents?
Authorities? (ex always, never, most times,
    sometimes, etc)
  • What are some pros and cons of corporal
    punishments?
  • What roles should adults take when relating to
    children?

14
And some more questions
  • Think about your adolescence. How did you view
your parents? How was your obedience/disobedience
    to them?
