Disclaimer
  • This is a CONCEPT PRESENTATION
  • The ideas given are FREE TO USE OR/AND ADAPT by
anyone who wishes to benefit wo/mankind on the
    roads
  • While the individual technological hardware and
software exists, a mated solution doesnt,
which is why this topic is supposed to act as a
catalyst to move things forward in the UAE, GCC
and globally. Everywhere human life, safety and
    convenience is valued

Toms story
  • Getting late out of bed
  • Work outdoors, visit customer
  • Finding customers address
  • Calling in late due traffic
  • Listening to some music
  • Passing toll gate without balance
  • Came late, forgot to put on parking ticket
  • Finishes the job, must go and attend MECOM, Abu
    Dhabi
  • Late for Imrans session, feels like overspeeding
    ?
  • Gets two radar points
  • Another day, Falls sick while driving, needs help
  • Yet another day, has a minor accident

5
An Air Traffic control view to driving
  • In the United States, it's 22 times safer flying
in a commercial jet than traveling by car,
according to a 1993-95 study by the U.S. National
    Safety Council.
  • The study compares accident fatalities per
    million passenger-miles traveled.
  • The number of U.S. highway deaths in a typical
    six-month period -- about 21,000 -- roughly
equals all commercial jet fatalities worldwide
since the dawn of jet aviation four decades ago.
  • In fact, fewer people have died in commercial
airplane accidents in America over the past 60
years than are killed in U.S. auto accidents in a
    typical three-month period.

Why is flying safer?
  • Planned routes
  • Maintained aircraft
  • On board collision avoidance systems
  • On ground traffic management systems
  • Complete access to information at most parts of
the flight on and above the ground
  • Systems to avoid distractions
  • A mode of transportation based on proactive
    SYSTEMS than IMPULSE reactions

Concept Aspects
  • Safety
  • Convenience
  • Revenue collection
  • Entertainment
  • Marketing

9
Lets take a look at safety first
  • Making UAE roads
  • the SAFEST
  • in the world!

10
Globally'Road deaths like an epidemic'
  • Traffic accidents are no less than a global
epidemic, killing over 1.2 million people
    annually
  • said the President of the International Road
Safety Organisation, PRI, Joop Goos stressing the
importance of recognising the magnitude of the
    worldwide problem of accidents.
  • "However, it is a problem which is often
    underestimated
  • because of which it does not get the due amount
    of attention it deserves,
  • "Traffic accidents are like everyday disasters
that happen without the world really noticing,"

11
UAE Situation
  • Road accidents number one cause of accidental
    deaths amongst UAE children
  • http//www.ameinfo.com/172703.html
  • http//wikitravel.org/en/Dubai
  • UAE road death toll highest, every year
  • 32 UAE Nationals die in road accidents per
    100,000
  • 15 in the United States
  • 6 per 100,000 in Sweden
  • This is considered one of the highest death tolls
    in the world
  • Speeding and other bad driving practices are
    blamed for this terrible statistics
  • Gulf News / http//www.ameinfo.com/24179.html

12
Police Needs
  • Control over speeding
  • Spot drunk / erratic driving
  • Help in case of emergencies and accidents
  • Improve civic sense road manners
  • Send advance warnings

13
So what is being done about it?
  • More cameras
  • Heavier fines and punishment
  • Spot speed checks
  • Stricter vehicle inspections
  • Point system

14
So how can we make it better?
  • Take the police driver relationship to the next
    level
  • Realtime!

15
Realtime, but how?
  • Similar technology to tracking devices used in
fleet management and for theft protection
  • Using a GPS mobile phone with unique SIM card,
installed in the car, connected to power supply
    and audio system
  • Connected to the Operator via fixed data line and
Push to talk service (like walkie talkie)
  • Software (e.g. Locatik variant) transmitting GPS
data (coordinates, speed) live to the police
    server
  • Analyzed and action taken by Police

16
Police Analysis and Action
  • Police Analysis
  • Police Action
  • Based on realtime GPS data
  • Customized software at police server can
    automatically identify dangerous driving patterns
    like
  • Overspeeding
  • Abrupt lane changes
  • Car stoppage on highway lanes
  • Overspeeding
  • Automated push to talk message is heard to slow
    down
  • Depending on speed, fine imposition or/and police
    patrol dispatch
  • Abrupt lane changes
  • Sign of rash or perhaps drunk driving
  • PTT message/ patrol dispatch
  • Car Stoppage on highway main lanes
  • Indication of accident
  • Immediate communication to send medical relief

Means lower accidents, faster response, fewer
deaths, safer roads!
17
Driver Needs
  • Focus on driving!
  • Navigate to new destinations
  • Safely Place and receive calls
  • Entertainment via radio and music
  • Payment of toll taxes
  • Payment of parking fees
  • Help in case of emergencies and accidents

18
Driving used to be a pleasureand then came
mobile phones!
  • Using a mobile phone while driving as dangerous
    as being drunk
  • According to a new Carnegie Mellon Universitys
study which was published in the latest issue of
the Brain Research journal, using a mobile phone
while driving could be as dangerous as being
under the influence of alcohol. In fact,
researchers found that drivers under the
influence of alcohol and those speaking on cell
phones tend to commit the same errors.
  • With help of brain imaging, the study documented
how mobile phone use alone reduces 37 of brain
activity engaged in driving. This was proved in a
simulator where drivers with mobile phones
zigzaged out of their lanes like they were drunk.

19
Drivers prayer
  • I wanna be safe, have fun and ease while I
    drive
  • My destinations
  • My calls
  • My music
  • Targeted marketing offers
  • Toll system ease, car flexibility
  • Parking fee payment hassle
  • Mobile payments for toll tickets
  • Help when I need it

20
RTA
  • Toll taxes
  • Parking fees

21
Status Quo
  • Toll Taxes
  • Immense investment in infrastructure hence few
gates, other traffic congestion points still
    remain
  • Investment in recharge mechanism
  • Investment and hassle in car installation
  • Call centre cost and management
  • Parking Machines
  • Infrastructure investment
  • Spot check employees needed, harsh environment

22
RTA Solution
  • No need for toll gates!
  • The police server will have exact location and
    path of every car
  • All you need to do is mark RED or congestion
zones with a five meter extra margin
  • RTA can have a 1,000 toll gates ready in no time!
  • Even if you reduce cost per pass to AED 0.50, you
will be making triple the money and reducing
    congestion
  • No need for parking machines!
  • The police server knows last stopped position
    of the car
  • If its parked in the charged zone, it will be
charged pro rata for the duration
  • Push to talk or sms messages can be sent to
remind consumer of low balance or payment
    deduction

23
Basic Hardware
  • A GPS enabled mobile phone
  • Using a customized software
  • is connected to a cellular network for voice,
push to talk and data calls
  • and positioning satellites to get exact
    coordinates
  • Is continuously transmitting
  • its position, speed and direction continuously to
a central server based with the traffic police
  • Easy installation
  • A mobile phone, cradle, charger, positioned
correctly on the windscreen for maximum reception
  • At annual renewal
  • At popular mobile distributor outlet
  • Other authorized agents

24
Costing and Revenue
  • Cost of a basic GPS phone in market inclusive of
software at mass scale, appx USD 200 per car
  • Marketing services based on localization to
generate ad revenue for the government
  • Seamless parking and fine fees will further
    increase government revenue
  • Operators can offer data for free for the
application alone to increase call revenue
    besides use subscriber willingness and
    information for targeted marketing campaigns

25
Challenges I
  • What if driver turns mobile off?
  • Heavy fines can be imposed, there are multiple
    ways of tracking this
  • Hard wiring with car engine can be done, (like
car theft and vehicle monitoring systems so this
    threat is totally eliminated)
  • Decision engine programmed in a way to identify
    possible violators
  • Spot checks at toll gates and using the
    software
  • These are semi auto kind of a solution for
tracking, the automated solution is the fitting
of the device which constantly remains switched
on if the car is on and that will be the best way
to know which cars are not operational and can
    be focused on checks
  • Mileage can be used to check at car renewal time
    as well
  • Driver status update option can define when the
    car is not in use
  • What is the coverage of toll zones?
  • If a vehicle remains within a toll zone, there
can be a 10 meter radius during which the toll
can be charged (well within most GPS accuracy)
  • .

26
Challenges II
  • What will be maximum amount of toll or parking
    tickets per day?
  • As per regulations decided by the authorities,
the benefit will be in terms of multiple gates to
control many congestion points than few at
    present
  • Operator issues
  • Identity Each car will have a unique SIM, more
like driver license, and linked with it so if the
system goes to another car, the operation is
    still perfect
  • Bad signal Toll zones are generally in the
middle of the cities where its rare to happen,
besides operators can install micro sites on
    those locations
  • Fixed data line will be the ideal option for data
    charging
  • The intent is to improve convenience for the
driver, reduce cost to consumer and make the
system flexible and cost efficient for the
    Government

27
Whats Next?
  • Whats next
  • Draw out a detailed project plan
  • Meetings between
  • Government representatives
  • Operators
  • Handset manufacturers
  • Software vendors and
  • Members of the community to fine tune the idea
  • Case study LOCATIK, the handset / server end
software that can bring the idea to the ground in
    literally no time!
  • A revolutionary evolution in the making
