Overview
  • Protocol for local and global auto-configuration
    in IPv4/v6 manets
  • Local allocation of unique IP addresses for
    intra-manet communications (MANET-local
    addresses)
  • Global allocation of unique globally routable IP
addresses and (at least) a route to the Internet
    for external communications
  • Extends the ideas of previous IETF
    internet-drafts
  • Tries to fulfill two main objectives
  • Extensibility
  • Low overhead
  • Can be integrated within an ad hoc routing
    protocol
  • The protocol can be used as a general service
    discovery mechanism
  • New services can be easily added in the future

Basic additional features
  • Local auto-configuration
  • MANET-DAD procedure (request/reply)
  • May use information of the routing protocol to
    detect/avoid duplicates
  • Global auto-configuration
  • Internet-Gateways (IGWs) may operate either
proactively, reactively, or in a hybrid way
  • An adaptive algorithm based on the distance to
    the sources is recommended
  • Routes to the IGWs are created
  • Messages can be combined to reduce overhead
  • Additional features
  • DNS discovery
  • Nodes can work as intermediate proxies (P bit)

Further work
  • Change MANET-DAD to a conflict resolution
    approach
  • Assume the uniqueness of the auto-configured
    address
  • Solve the conflict when it is detected
  • Format and scope of MANET-local addresses
  • Unique Global Addresses with a reserved Global
    ID?
  • Determine when proxying is worthwhile
  • Integration within routing protocols, is there
    any consensus about it?
  • Use of SMF...
  • to forward flooded messages conflicts with the
    use of proxies
  • to detect duplicated packets currently the
protocol uses caches, but this could be an
    alternative
  • Secure operation of the protocol
