Title: The Role of the Frontal Lobes in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

1
The Role of the Frontal Lobes in Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • By Maria Rachal

2
Background
  • ADHD is a common disorder found in children and
    adults.
  • It seems that the frontal lobes apparently play a
role in the deficits exhibited by this disorder.
  • Individual who suffer from this disorder have
difficulty in regards to social interaction as
    well.

3
Method
  • Participants were a sample of 47 children who
either had ADHD or were in a control group.
  • Task to run an array of cognitive tests and to
    interpret the test results.
  • The tests were used to see how the participants
brain worked if they had ADHD and if they did not.

4
Results
  • They found that the frontal lobe volume is
smaller in the right dorsolateral than the left
    in children with ADHD.
  • Children who suffer from ADHD have smaller
    prefrontal lobes.
  • This may explain why they suffer behavioral and
    cognitive deficits.

5
Conclusions
  • The frontal lobes are a significant part of the
    brain.
  • Individuals who have damage in the frontal lobes
have trouble with relationships, staying on
task, and easily get upset or frustrated.
  • More research needs to be done linking the
frontal lobes and social interaction together.
