Definition

• Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art, and to be more
  exact, a genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists
  in three forms Cante, the song, Baile, the
  dance, and Guitarra, guitar playing. Gypsies are
  very often named as its fathers.
• Spain has been dominated by many diverse
  cultures and civilizations during different
  historical epochs.
• There were the legendary Tartessos, and seven
  centuries of Muslim occupation hardly could have
  passed without leaving traces.
• Both of these influenced Flamenco.

History

• Indian elements
• Gypsies brought the flamenco style with them from
  Hindustan.
• Strong resemblance in the ragas, the nuances of
  the Indian dance and similar arm and hand
  movements
• The Christian reconquest
• The Catholic Kings captured the last Muslim
  stronghold of Granada in 1492
• Jews and Muslims had three choices conversion,
  exile or the Inquisition.
• Their history in the peninsular was a long
  history of persecution.

• Moslems and Gypsies head for the hills
• The remaining Muslims fled the populated towns
  and villages and headed for the hills.
• Many Gypsies joined the fleeing Muslims and took
  refuge in the mountain regions and caves.
• The birth of flamenco
• These cultures had little in common with each
  other but they found themselves united against a
  common enemy.
• In this underground environment of forced exile,
  the first flamenco forms were created.
• Flamenco is that collection of songs and dances,
  Gypsy and non-Gypsy, which made it into the 20th
  century

Sevillanas

• The Sevillanas is a couples dance usually danced
  by groups during the Feria de Sevilla, Feria de
  Malaga and other traditional celebrations
• It has made its way into discos as a popular
  dance form in recent years.
• It is highly structured its 6 count rasgueado
  marking compas (in 3/4 time)

• The Malaga Fair commemorates the incorporation of
  the city to the kingdom of Castile by the
  Catholic Kings, who entered Malaga on August 19,
  1487.
• The first fair was established in 1491
• It has become a truly cosmopolitan and
  international event
• It reflects the open nature of the capital city
  of Costa del Sol, the major tourist area of
  Spain.

• There are two kinds of Feria, day Feria and night
  Feria
• The day Feria, in the morning and afternoon,
  takes place in downtown.
• The night Feria, in the evening and night takes
  place outside downtown.
• There are attractions and many stalls where you
  can eat, lots of dancing and singing.
• It starts at 700p.m. and finishes at 6 or 7 in
  the morning.
• In the morning people eat churros con chocolate,
  famous throughout Spain. The churros a strip of
  fried dough is dipped into the hot chocolate,
  which is very thick.

The shawls

• The shawl was introduced in Spain in the 18th
  Century.
• Nowadays it is used to go to bullfightings,
  weddings, parties outdoors
• There are shawls of different sizes, colors and
  materials.
• The one that goes with the Gypsy dress is called
  mantoncillo (small shawl) because it is smaller.
• A brooch holds it to the dress. It is very
  important that the mantoncillo matches well with
  the dress.
• A good quality hand embroidered silk shawl is a
  masterpiece and can be very expensive.
• At the moment they are so fashionable that in
  many cities like London they are sold in shops to
  wear with any outfit.

The fan

• In the old days fans were used to communicate
  between women and men.
• It was used in public places
• Here are some examples of this ancient language
  of the fan, which is no longer used.

• Very sturdy heel.

• He was born in Córdoba (Southern of Spain) in
  1969 in a gipsy family.
• He studied dance in Madrid
• He entered the National Spanish Ballet at the age
  of 15!
• He performed in Metropolitan Opera House (Nueva
  York)
• Last successful perfomances Gypsy Passion and
  Soul

• She was born in Cadiz in 1971
• She started dancing at 8
• Danced for the Queen of Spain at 9
• At 18 won a dancing contest on TV
• 1991 Debut in Paris with Alhambra
• 1992 Town Hall Theatre in New York
• 1997 Founded her own dancing company
• 1999 Danced in Imposible Mission
• 2000 She made a "tournée in Japan, Peru, Costa
  Rica, Panama, Brazil, Venezuela and USA (Miami)
