  • OBJECTIVE
  • At the conclusion, the student will be able to
    recite the ITU phonetic alphabet and verbally
    communicate a variety of emergency messages
    utilizing the phonetic alphabet.

  • WHAT IT IS AND WHY IT IS USED
  • set of standardized words that represent each
    letter of the alphabet and individual numerals
  • standardization makes it easier for radio
    operators from around the world to communicate

    phonetics in poor conditions
  • phonetics are clear, concise and free of
    confusion regarding the identification of similar
    sounding letters and numbers (e.g.
    b,c,d,e,g,p,t,v, m and n)

  • WHEN THE PHONETIC ALPHABET IS USED
  • the phonetic alphabet is to be used whenever a
    mistake in spelling may occur, particularly when
    sending names
  • ARES members are encouraged to identify their
    stations by spelling out their call signs using
    phonetics.

  • numerical figures should be sent as written e.g.
    1093 - should be sent as "figures - wun zero
    niner tree" and not as one thousand and

  • DISREGARD - Consider this transmission as not
    sent
  • MAYDAY - spoken word for distress communications
  • MAYDAY RELAY - The relaying of a distress call

  • MONITOR - Listen on channel/frequency.
  • PAN PAN - The spoken word for an urgency
    communication
  • SEELONCE (SILENCE) - The spoken word to impose
    radio silence
  • WILCO - Instructions received, understood and
    will be complied with
  • SECURITY - Spoken word for safety communications
