Fact SheetDeveloped by Safety Office, SCARNG,

Fuel Storage and Issue
  • Handling petroleum products presents many unique
safety hazards. However, handling POL Products
    correctly is very safe.
  • Tank vehicles should be positioned in the
transfer area so it is headed toward the nearest
exit and away from buildings and other
obstructions. Do not let other vehicles block
    exit routes.
  • Tankers should be spaced a minimum of 25 feet
apart during transfer operations and when parked
a separation of 100 feet is recommended. Tankers
must be located at least 50 feet from any
    building.
  • Switches or circuit breakers, clearly identified
and easily accessible, should be provided at a
    location remote from dispensing devices,
including remote pumping systems, to shut off
power to all dispensing devices in the event of
an emergency. These devices or disconnects must
be installed in approved locations but no less
than 20 feet nor more than 30 feet from the fuel
    dispensing devices they serve.
  • Each service station must be provided with at
least one fire extinguisher of minimum approved
classification of 6 B,C located so the
extinguisher is within 75 feet of each pump,
dispenser, underground fill pipe opening, and
    lubrication or service room.
  • For more information, consult FM 10-67-1, Chapter
    2

Question What is not correct about this
arrangement? Answer The tanker is not 25 feet
from another fuel tank and is not facing the exit
route. Also, although it is not evident from the
photo, other vehicles are blocking the exit route.
