2
How the story began
  • Last May, visited CALIS center and gave
presentations at PKU and TsingHua Univ., through
    HKCAN recommendation
  • Received New Direction/Library III Award
  • Invited to join an informal seminar with several
serials catalogers and managers of university
    libraries in Beijing
  • After this seminar, was recruited as member of
CALIS Expert Committee in charge of serials
cataloging for western languages and giving
    training sessions for CALIS members

3
Training goals
  • Reality some member libraries do not know and
    follow the rules
  • Short-term the training can improve the quality
    of records
  • Long-term not ready for CONSER yet but the
training can bring awareness or planning for
    future participation
  • Specific goals
  • How to apply rules to catalog serials
  • Familiar with MARC tags for serials format
  • Original cataloging workflow and maintenance
  • Link cataloging rules with MARC tagging
  • Updates with serials cataloging rules/e-resources

4
Target audience
  • Catalogers/managers of CALIS member libraries
  • CALIS (China Academic Library Information
    System)
  • like RLIN/OCLC in China
  • hosted in Peking University Library
  • 500 member libraries more than 96--university
    libraries

5
Target audience
  • CALIS Union Catalog
  • Database was established in 1997

    6,300,000 holdings records created
  • 163 catalogers/TS managers were trained in this
    training

Training manual bilingual example
  • ????????? ???????? (What are continuing
    resources? Integrating resources?)
  • ????????????? (What is now included in the
    revised chapter 12?
  • ????????????? (What is the revised definition
    of a serial?)
  • ??????????????? (What are the more difficult
    types of serials to catalog?)

9
Challenges
  • Language/culture barriers
  • Need accurate translation of library jargon used
    in China
  • Simplified scripts of Chinese
  • Cultural/political subtlety, e.g. National
    library
  • Hard to translate certain new terms, e.g.
    aggregator neutral record
  • Diverse needs of trainees
  • Unwilling to have needs survey beforehand
  • Some very experienced but some not

10
Challenges
  • Big group hard to have any group discussion or
discussion in depth trainer still asked
questions and made training more interactive
  • I was the only trainer for almost four days, and
had no training partner or assistant
  • Most trainees preferred to ask individual
questions during breaks, so some questions were
repeated and the trainer hardly had any break ?

11
Feedback
  • Clear and organized contents to understand
    cataloging rules
  • Interactive training
  • Add a session of MARC tags next time
  • Keep in touch via emails ongoing emails of
    cataloging questions
  • Future training session will be planned

12
Whats unforgettable
  • Certain trainees hunger for learning
  • Good questions
  • CALIS union catalog team expertise and
    efficiency
  • Hospitalityyummy meals
  • Friendship

13
Visions
  • China
  • 1ST CALIS training program in serials cataloging
    for western languages
  • Needs to meet standards for international
    resource sharing
  • CUL
  • Expand language coverage to CJK
  • PKU University Librarian expressed interest in
    more collaboration with CUL

14
Visions
  • OCLC
  • CALIS is converting records from CNMARC to MARC21
and plans to share records with OCLC in future
  • Challenges of record conversion
  • Equivalent MARC fields
  • Difference in cataloging rules, e.g. main entry
  • Unicode only MARC21 defined characters are
valid. For example, for CJK-only characters,
those that can be converted to East Asian
Character Code (EACC) characters are valid.

15
Visions
  • CONSER
  • Expand language coverage in CONSER database
  • Consistently has Spanish version of SCCTP
training manuals, but not for other languages,
    e.g. Chinese
  • Training in Russia, Korea, etc.?
  • Small-scale training held in Taiwan or Hong Kong
before but not such a large-scale training in
    China yet

16
PCC
  • PCC Strategic Directions for 20062010 three out
of five statements related to globalization or
    training
  • Be a forward thinking, influential leader in the
    global metadata community
  • Pursue globalization
  • Lead in the education and training of catalogers

17
Thanks
  • To all of you, e.g. SPS and Iris
  • BCD support from Kate and Bob
  • CONSER Les CDS Bruce Johnson
  • CALIS team leader Ms. Xie training
coordinator Ms. Liu and PKU serials cataloger
    Ms. He
  • My translation team at CU
  • HKCAN Patrick Lo

18
Anecdotes
  • Can I have your autograph?
  • You are like sunshine because youre from US???
  • Asked personal questions your answers are like
    movie stars answers
  • Diversity of questions
  • What is AACR2? What is CONSER?
  • Does CUL use SFX and link resolver?
  • Can you give a brief introduction to CUL? Can
you share CUL online documentation and SCARM?
