Title: How to Increase your Productivity and Visibility and Advance your Career

1
How to Increase your Productivity and Visibility
and Advance your Career
  • Sally W. Vernon, MA, PhD
  • Director, Division of Health Promotion
    Behavioral Sciences
  • The University of Texas-Houston
  • School of Public Health
  • May 27, 2009

2
Productivity
  • Create and nurture a research team composed of
    scientists in diverse disciplines
  • Encourage collaborators to identify research
topics of interest to them and piggy back them
    on to your research

3
Productivity
  • Invite your students to your research team
meetings and encourage them to become involved in
your project (if in an academic setting)

4
Productivity
  • Create a papers table early on
  • Develop written authorship guidelines
  • Be clear about the ground rules
  • identify who will take the lead on each paper and
    who will do what
  • agreements about authorship should have an
    expiration date

5
Productivity
  • In general, your position in the authorship line
up should reflect your level of effort on the
    paper
  • Negotiate for your position in the line up -- but
you dont always need to be 1st or 2nd (be
    reasonable)
  • Remember that sometimes politics rules
  • Under all circumstances, be gracious

6
Productivity
  • When should you be the senior author?
  • No clear norms in behavioral science but probably
not until you are an associate or even full
    professor

7
Productivity and Visibility
  • Look for opportunities to develop research
    collaborations with investigators at other
    institutions
  • Ask external experts to review your grant before
submission (and pay them an honorarium if you can)

8
Productivity
  • Negotiate for a lighter teaching load for the
    first year or two
  • Graciously decline opportunities to serve on
    institutional committees
  • Until promotion (best case scenario)
  • For as long as possible but consistent with the
    norms in your organization

9
Visibility
  • Get involved in a professional organization (but
    only 1)
  • Present at professional meetings
  • preferably after youve submitted the paper to a
    journal
  • Volunteer to organize theme sessions or symposia
or serve on the program committee

10
Visibility
  • Serve as a journal reviewer for articles that are
    in your area of expertise
  • Occasionally serve as an ad hoc reviewer for NIH,
    ACS, other groups

11
Good Advice
  • Develop a cordial/collegial relationship with
program staff at funding agencies. They can
  • provide feedback about your research ideas and
the fit with their programmatic research agenda
  • provide feedback about the review of your
    proposal, particularly the intangibles
  • be helpful in negotiating the bureaucracy

12
Good Advice
  • Seek out mentors at every stage of your career
both at home and at other institutions
  • The mentoring process is a 2-way street
  • Its not all about you
