Course Selection Timeline
  • Course selection information will be shared with
    current grade 9 students on Tuesday, February
    19th at 910 and1050 am.
  • Students will receive their course selection
    forms along with information on courses at that
    time.
  • A parents signature is required on course
    selection forms, which must be returned to the
    counselling center on or before Monday, February
    25th in order to complete the course selection
    process.

  • Students should receive timetables for the
    2008/2009 school year in June.

Why is accurate course selection so important?
  • The master timetable is developed by determining
    how many students have selected each course, then
    creating enough classes in each subject area to
    meet those needs.
  • If students decide to change courses, there may
    not be room for them in another course or it may
    not fit into their timetables.
  • Courses with low enrollment may not be able to be
    offered.

Student Timetable Changes
  • Students are asked to choose their courses
    wisely.
  • Timetable changes will be done in late June for
    the following reasons
  • 1. Incomplete timetables blocks missing from a
    schedule.
  • 2. Graduation requirements a student is missing
    a required course or needs a course for entrance
    to a post secondary institution.
  • 3. A student has 3 or more academic courses in
    one semester, and would like to balance their
    timetable.

Graduation Transitions (MAP)
  • The goal and purpose of the MAP (My Action Plan)
    is for students to document their future goals
    and plans, to show that they are healthy and
    active citizens, and to celebrate all of their
    skills, experiences, and accomplishments between
    grades10 and 12.
  • This requirement is worth 4 credits, is completed
    outside of class time and receives an RM
    (Requirement Met) on the students transcript

  • The MAP consists of the following components
  • Title Page
  • Transition Plan
  • 30 Hours of Work/Volunteer Experience
  • 80 Hours of Grade 11/12 Physical Activity
  • Resume, Cover Letter, and Related Documents
  • Healthy Living Plan
  • Panel Interview

  • Passport to Education rewards student
    achievement in grades 10-12. The Passport to
    Education is based on a students top 5 courses.

Post Secondary Entrance Requirements
  • Each post secondary institution and program will
    have many specific entrance requirements, some of
    them grade 11 courses and some of them grade 12
    courses which have grade 11 pre-requisites.
  • For this reason, it is important that your son or
    daughter research his/her future educational
    plans before selecting courses for next year.
  • Research can be done online and through
    catalogues available in the Counselling Centre.

Honours Courses What are They?
  • Are intended to provide enrichment and to
    acclimate students to the academic rigor required
    in an AP course disciplined study habits,
    explore topics in greater depth, build academic
    confidence.
  • Students receive the SAME evaluations (tests) and
    therefore, students marks should not drop if they
    continue to apply themselves in these courses.

  • At OKM we offer honours courses in grades
  • 10 11 in the following subjects
  • Subject to enrollment

AP Courses What are they?
  • AP Advanced Placement
  • Students will receive 4 credits towards their
    graduation requirements
  • Students who receive a 4 or 5 out of 5 on their
    AP Final Exam may apply for first year university
    credit for the course, and may be eligible for
    Advanced Placement Scholarships.

Do I need a second language?
  • French is optional in grade 9 and beyond.
  • Students may take Introductory Spanish 11 or
    Introductory German 11 in grade 10 but should be
    aware that these are rigorous courses.
  • A second language is not required for graduation.
  • Some university and college programs do require
    students to have a second language to at least
    the grade 11 level for admission. It is the
    responsibility of the students to consult
    individual institutions for more information.

What is meant by Fine Arts and Applied Skills?
  • Fine Arts are courses that foster creativity and
    self expression such as art, drama and music.
  • Applied skills courses involve practical,
    hands-on application of skills that are useful in
    daily life such as woodwork, home economics or
    drafting.

Selecting a Math Course
  • Your childs Math teacher will recommend the
    appropriate Math course for the next grade level
    based on their grades, work ethic and
    understanding of Math.
  • A math committee will meet to review student math
    selections and may contact parents in an effort
    to ensure students are placed in the course that
    will allow them to achieve success while trying
    to meet their needs for future studies.

Career Programs
  • Transition Programs
  • These are programs where students have an
    opportunity to start learning a trade and also
    receive high school credits toward graduation.
  • S.S.A. Secondary School Apprenticeship program
    -students work for a journeyman in a various
    trade and begin learning the skills and
    collecting the hours needed to meet the criteria
    to be certified as a journeyman. This program
    works best if the student knows a journeyman
    currently working that is willing to take them on
    as an apprentice.
  • BCIT and OC Both institutions offer programs
    that train students in the entry level skills
    needed to be successful in a particular trade.
    Partial funding may be provided as well.
    Students need to meet with Mr. Kirsch and
    complete an application package well in advance
    of the deadline.
  • For a complete listing of the individual
    transition courses please pick up a red handout
    at the end of this session.
