Broadband shares trends estimate
Cable modem will more less keep its current
market share.

Broadband technologies will substantially grow in
absolute numbers.

Digital TV Digital versus Analog
Digital technology presents smaller share versus
analog in Cable TV networks

Internet via Cable TV 3 alternatives
  • One way via Analog TV vertical or horizontal
blanking int. a) VBI max 12,5 lines 9.2 kbps
per line 115 kbps Suitable for Data
casting (Stocks, weather etc.) b) Horizontal 800
kbps less stable c) Full field up to 4 mbps
  • 2) One way via Digital TV dial-up return path
HYBRID-NET Up to 56 mbps forward link
  • 3) Two-way via Digital Cable Modems 56

HYBRID-NET Advantages
  • No amplifiers upgrades needed at Cable TV network
works with even with one-way amplifiers only gt
INVESTMENT SAVINGS on cable network upgrade
  • Forward link up to 56 Mbps
  • Less expensive Central Equipment
  • Can be operated along with Analog TV channels
  • Inexpensive QAM receivers
  • Easier customer management
  • Unlimited number of customers regarding Head-End
    side
  • QUICK implementation

12
IP Multicast Functionality
  • Capacity must be taken at
  • 1) Backbone
  • 2) ISP autonomous network
  • 3) End-user connection Last mile

PUSH e-mail
PUSH e-mail System serves for downloading e-mails
from remote POP3 servers and their instant
automatic transmission via a one-way link using
UDP/ip interface through any DVB/ip GW (IP
encapsulator). PUSH e-mail System brings to
end-users significant increase in comfort as
incoming e-mails are received automatically
without any intervention from an user side at
significantly higher speeds of DVB link comparing
to ordinary dial-up (up to 20 mbit/s to
end-user). From economic point of view it
eliminates PTT dial-up fees for connections
required just for sending acknowledgment for
received e-mails and checking inbox for incoming
e-mails.
15
PUSH FTP Download Center
PUSH FTP System allows to deliver selected file
in Explorer via a one-way DVB link without any
need for an active return path for acknowledging
received packets.User can choose whether
selected file should be send only to him PRIVATE
(encrypted) or can be published also in Download
Center PUBLIC (unencrypted) for other users to
join this file broadcast. Also user can choose
whether file must be delivered IMMEDIATELY or
LATER (e.g. over night) when there is more free
bandwidth (for lower price). This helps to reduce
charges for dial-up connection and maximizes
benefit of Broadband DVB Internet to
user.Download Center is informing all other
users about ordered files and allows user to join
this transmission and thus turns more expensive
unicast transmission into more effective
multicast de facto on air.

TCP/IP Accelerator http pre-fetch
Web Server
MD TCP/ip accelerator serves for improving and
unifying TCP/IP performance for broadband long
latency networks e.g. satellite, DVB-T with GPRS
return path etc. It is based on transparent
TCP/ip connection splitting into 3 TCP/ip
connections. The first part of connection (a)),
there is no need to increase the speed because it
is IP backbone, so RTT is very short. The second
part of connection (b)) can cause significant TCP
performance reduction due to long RTT. (because
of long distance to a geostationary satellite) in
combination with a width of satellite broadband.
TCP/ip accelerator avoids negative reaction of
TCP congestion window by implementing a satellite
specific acknowledgement protocol (a large TCP
Window size, a decreased capacity for the return
link). The third part of connection (c)) over
local LAN, there is short RTT no need for
increasing the speed.
a) TCP/ip connection from Data source to
Central site via IP backbone (short RTT)
MD Accelerator
b) TCP/ip Communication from the Central site
to Terminals via broadband long RTT
link. Effective acknowledgment mechanism, FEC,
compression integrated.

BNMS
Broadcast Network Management Systemserves for
controlling access of users to various
services.BNMS allows for a Service provider to
activate or deactivate services for users. It
has built on Conditional Access (CA) table
containing authorizations for the reception of
specific services (i.e.virtual channels). BNMSs
function is to remotely change CA tables for each
user in order to provide a control over services
received by each user. The CA table can be either
stored in a PC or in the receiving HW (RS 422 ISA
card). Complete CA message contains two types of
tables. One is containg the list of services with
their names and IDs and second one contains list
of user IDs and list of allowed services for each
user. They can be sent either automatically or
manually.

Statistics and Billing
The purpose of the Statistics and Billing module
is to gather statistical data for DVB/IP GW
Channels/services and Users for purpose of System
Maintainance and Billing. It is accessible via
PHP web pages to Service Provider as well as for
User. Allows to define billing methods and
pricing for each individual channelGenerates
bills in defined accounting periodsStatistics
can be run at any OS with WEB, PHP support and
MySQLAllows to charge according to traffic
volume, connection time or flat feeAllows to
define 3 Service Time Zones (peak hours) and
define different pricing for individual time
zoneAllows to define peak-free days (where no
peak hours are applied)Generates and sends
passwords for end-users to access Statistics web
