The World Is Changing
  • More than 1 billion people in the world are
overweight, and at least 300 million of those are
clinically obese 1. Without action, more than
1.5 billion people are expected to be overweight
    by 2015 2.
  • Over 600 million people worldwide have chronic
diseases, and the spending on chronic diseases is
expected to increase 3. For example, in the US
alone, spending is expected to increase from 500
billion a year to 685 billion by 2020.
  • Globally, the number of persons 60 and older was
600 million in 2000. It is expected to double to
    1.2 billion by 2025 4.

Healthcare Unbound1
  • Health care delivery must change in the future
    as
  • patient demand increases and
  • resources (physicians, nurses, money) shrink or
    remain limited
  • Patient-centric care care to follow the patient,
    rather than vice versa
  • Healthcare Unbound is disruptive, but the right
    thing to do
  • Market segments
  • Chronic disease management (incl. remote patient
    monitoring)
  • Post acute care (including hospital-at-home)
  • Assisted daily living (or elder care)
  • 34 billion market forecast 2015 for Healthcare
    Unbound
  • with rapid market growth 2009 (just 2 short years
    away...)
  • assuming payor adoption (reimbursement) thru
    proven value
  • To date, disappointing adoption, and no tipping
    point in sight

Conclusion
  • The way Healthcare is currently delivered is not
sustainable in a changing world. A shift in
    paradigm is needed.
  • Healthcare Unbound is certainly gaining traction,
however the market size of 34 B in 2015 might be
    too optimistic.
  • Philips is changing into a Healthcare Unbound
    company.
  • The Continua Health Alliance is aiming to lower
    the adoption barriers
  • the lack of reimbursement and government
    policies.
  • the lack of interoperability between different
    systems and devices.
  • The attention from huge consumer IT companies
like Google and Microsoft will hopefully help to
take Healthcare Unbound to the next level.
  • The issue isnt whether Healthcare Unbound
    succeeds, its when!
