    judgements about themselves

16
Melissas story
  • Melissa, now a year 11 pupil, began the course
last year. She had low self esteem and
particularly disliked team games, She had little
understanding of health and fitness. As part of
the course she chose to take part in new
    activities including aerobics, skiing, climbing
and using the Fitness suite. She also took the
    JSLA award.
  • In her own words
  • The activity I have enjoyed most is the JSLA. I
have learned how to coach young children to do a
range of activities. I have improved my
understanding across a wide range of activities
this year and have gained a large amount of
confidence in my own ability. I have gained more
confidence to do more activities than I ever
would have thought of 3 years ago. I had a great
sense of success in climbing to the top of the
climbing wall and abseiling all the way back to
the bottom. I now have a great understanding of
fitness and my body. I understand the rules in
team games better and how to co-operate with team
    mates.
  • Melissa now scores herself 10 out of 10 for
confidence. She reports that she now makes better
choices about her participation because she has
the confidence to do so and has learned that she
likes a good challenge. She leads aerobics
sessions for her peers and shows other pupils how
to use equipment in the Fitness suite.

17
FUTURE - Still to be achieved
  • Expand opportunity choice within the 4 strands
    e.g. Introduce recreational activities -
    Swimming, Golf, Martial Arts.
  • Review and revise Assessment and Certification -
looking for a local community sponsor !
  • Monitoring and evaluation to include - School
Council, Rosenburg Self Esteem test , and
research by University students on attitudinal
    changes at KS4
  • Tracking students post 16
  • Alternative accreditation option - APPLIED
    PHYSICAL EDUCATION
  • Play a major role in the whole school KS4
    curriculum advancement in accreditation pathways.
  • SUSTAINABLITY - The Diploma is totally dependent
upon additional funding through specialist status.
