DARE 2008 Presentations

  • Assessment Coordinator

2
Redesigning EDSMART
3
EDSMART - Original Design Principals
  • Make clear knowledge, skills and dispositions
    expected of candidates
  • Contain evidence that will be looked at in making
    these assessments
  • Make clear standards and/or cut scores with
    respect to areas of performance
  • Contain diagnostic/analytic and summative levels
    of data and information

4
EDSMART - Challenges and FileMaker Software
  • Ongoing challenges have impeded developing
EDSMART so that it fulfills its original design
    principles.
  • Propose to redesign EDSMART using FileMaker
    software
  • user-friendly, relational database and relational
    database application creation tool
  • prefabricated database and database application
    templates
  • tools for building custom databases and database
    applications

5
EDSMART v2 - Advantages
  • Familiarity Many COE staff/faculty already use
FileMaker for their data management and reporting
needs. This means that staff/faculty are already
somewhat comfortable using FileMaker and existing
student and program data already in FileMaker v7
can be easily transferred to FileMaker v9
  • Data Transferability FileMaker v9 is compatible
with Oracle and MySQL databases, which means that
existing EDSMART data can be easily transferred
into FileMaker, and that data can be pulled into
EDSMART forms from TSPC and ODE databases

6
EDSMART v2 - Advantages
  • Modifiability The database structure and data
entry forms can be easily modified using
FileMakers Graphical User Interface (GUI) and
built-in functionality, which reduces, or even
eliminates, the need for programming expertise
and, in turn, means much less reliance on UCS
    time and staff resources
  • Form Similarity Data entry forms can be
developed so that they appear the same as, or
very similar to, the assessment forms that staff
and faculty have to complete. This reduces
training costs, user anxiety, and time spent on
    data entry

7
EDSMART v2 - Advantages
  • Customizable Reports
  • Data reports can easily be customized based on
    specific program or individual needs
  • Data Analysis Extraction
  • Data forms can contain embedded functions for
displaying the results of simple analyses (e.g.,
sums, percentages) data can be easily extracted
    in a format (e.g., tab-delimited,
comma-delimited) that is conducive to loading
into Microsoft Excel or SPSS for subsequent
    analyses
  • Multiple Platforms, Web-Based Access
  • Can be used on both Windows-based and Macintosh
    computer platforms supports multiple
simultaneous users and web-based access using
standard browsers such as Microsoft IE and
    Mozilla Firefox
