LANDSCAPING WITH FLORDIA NATIVE PLANTS

2
Why Landscape with Florida Natives
  • Reduce the use of pesticides and chemicals
  • Conserve water
  • Provide habitat for wildlife
  • Preservation of Floridas natural beauty
  • Plants are naturally adapted to our climate and
    soil
  • Minimal care such as watering and feeding

3
What is a Florida Native Plant
  • A Florida native plant refers to those species
occurring within the state boundaries prior to
European contact. More specifically it includes
those species understood as indigenous, occurring
in natural associations in habitats that existed
prior to significant human impacts and
    alterations of the landscape
  • Some Wild plants may be native or may be
naturalized exotics. A naturalized exotic plant
is one which can sustain itself outside of
cultivation outside its native range. Some of
these plants are considered pests because of
their weedy behavior in natural areas. These
invasive exotic pest plants disrupt naturally
balanced native plant communities, interfere with
fire and water flow, erode the soil and reduce
    fish and wildlife populations.

4
Typical Lawn Care Facts
  • Americans spend 1 billion hours mowing lawns each
    year
  • We use 70 million pounds of pesticides each year
  • We spent 17 billion on turf and related products
  • Lawns account for almost 31 million acres in US
  • There are better choices

5
Basic Landscape Guidelines
  • Begin with a drawing, including house, driveway,
    patios and other existing features.
  • Plan use areas such as public, private, utility
    and gardens.
  • Select trees as they will be the dominant feature
    in your landscape.
  • Select shrubs for screening, blocking views and
    directing traffic flows.
  • Select low growing ground covers to provide
cover, crowd out weeds and color.
  • Select a mulch to help retain moisture and
    prevent weed growth.
  • Keep in mind when selecting your plants
  • Is the planting area wet or dry?
  • Is the planting area in full sun or shade?
  • Are trees deciduous or evergreen?
  • How large will any shrub or tree get?
