Aragón View
- Aragón, with an area of 47.669 km² and
1.200.000 inhabitants (25 inhab/km²) includes
three provinces Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel. -
95 of the Aragonese region is a fragile and few
structured zone (a rural area), and the rest 5,
includes Zaragoza metropilitan area and its
industrial surroundings.

Economic Characteristics
Industrial sector the industrial sector in
Aragon is highly concentrated since 10 of the
industrial sub-sectors reach more than 70 of the
industrial added value and manpower. This
concentration is increasing and the main
specialisation sectors are car industry, electric
and electronic machinery and metallurgy. Services
sector the contribution of the sector service
to the total added value is 56 and 58 in
employment. In this sense, the percentages are
inferior to the national average. Commerce and
hotels reach more than 30 of the added value and
employment, which is followed by public services,
transport and communications.

Innovation as a pulling force for regional
competitiveness
Innovation means successful production,
assimilation and exploitation of new products and
processes. The Regional Innovation Strategy
(RIS) is the seed and the opportunity to promote
and develop a motivating Innovation Plan which
will place Aragón in the best position to begin
the XXI Century.

Total impact in Aragón
- A constant increase of the regions global
innovative effort (at an estimated percentage
rate of 12) in such a way that the global effort
will increase from 2.3 of the GNP in 1998 to 4
in 2003 - A RD total effort equivalent to 1 of
the GNP in the region in 2003 - A balanced
financing of RD among all public and private
agents - An annual 6 increase of the private
resources for innovation activities that are not
directly supported by the Plan - An annual
