1
Transferring Your WorkE-mail from School to
Home (and Back Again!)
2
E-mail
  • The only way to send your work from home to
school and from school to home is by using an
    e-mail account.
  • No disks are used in any computer at Brother
    Martin.
  • Brother Martin does not establish e-mail accounts
for its students. Students use their home
account. Free accounts are available at
hotmail.com if you or your family do not
currently maintain an e-mail account such as AOL,
Yahoo, Cox, Bellsouth or Hotmail. Please note
that parental permission is required to establish
    an account.
  • You must know your e-mail provider and your login
    and password.
  • The Brother Martin Acceptable Use Policy allows
the use of e-mail for research purposes only.
Transferring your work between school and home is
    acceptable and encouraged.

3
Composing e-mail with an attachment
  • For demonstration purposes, we will use Hotmail
as the e-mail provider. Your provider may
    have slightly different procedures. The
    Librarians will assist you.
  • With your Brother Martin login and password, log
    on to a school computer.
  • Open your document or PowerPoint presentation,
    make corrections.
  • Save to your T\ space, being sure to name it
    specifically. For complete saving instructions,
see Saving a Document to your Personal Server
Space posted on the Web Site.
  • Close PowerPoint or the program you are using.

4
  • Click on the Internet icon on the desktop and
enter the web address of your e-mail in the
    location line (hotmail.com).
  • Enter your e-mail address/screen name and
    password, click sign in.
  • Click on the Mail tab, then click on the New box
    (write).
  • Address the mail to your own e-mail address and
provide a subject reference so you will recognize
    the mail.
  • You may want to compose a short note to yourself.
DO NOT cut and paste your document into your
e-mail message. You must attach it.

5
Attaching your work to the e-mail
  • Still in the new message or write mail screen,
click on the Attach (paper clip) icon.
  • Now click on the File icon. Click on Browse to
search your T\ space for the document you want
to attach. Click on its title.
  • The file name will now appear in the Find File
    line. Now click OK.
  • If you need to attach more than one document,
    click OK and Attach Another.
  • The next step is to click Send to deliver the
    e-mail.
  • A message saying the mail has been sent will then
    appear.

6
Open your work at home and re-save
  • At home, open the Internet and log in to your
    own e-mail account.
  • Locate your mail in your inbox and open it.
  • Save it to your home computer, edit your work,
save again and close the application.
  • Transfer your work back to school
  • Follow the same compose mail, search, attach and
    send procedure.
  • At school, log on once again to your e-mail
    account.
  • Locate your mail, open the attachment and save to
your T\ space on the server.

7
Helpful hints
  • Remember, you are using only one e-mail account
to transfer files. Whether you access it at home
or school, your own account is the only one you
    are using.
  • Some accounts will only allow you to attach the
same amount of information as would normally fit
on a single floppy disk. Limit the size of your
    files.
  • attach pictures saved from the internet at school
  • use the same color scheme on all slides
  • do not use wall-papered backgrounds or word art
  • apply animations or transitions to PowerPoint at
    school
  • For additional suggestions, see PowerPoint
Preparing a Basic Presentation posted on the
    student web site.
