Beginnings in Israel Women in Black as we know
it today began in 1988 in Israel. In 1987, 20
years after Israel occupied the West Bank and
Gaza, the Palestinian intifada began. In response
Israeli Jewish women began to stand in weekly
vigils in public places, usually at busy road
junctions.

In the north of Israel, where the concentration
of Arab communities is greatest, Palestinian
women who are Israeli citizens were also active
in Women in Black groups. Many local WIB groups
made contact with women across the Green Line
engaged in support work, e.g. visiting
Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

Peace is something that has to be worked for at
all times, not just times of crisis
WOMEN IN BLACK in the UK say End the
Occupation. Since the democratic elections in
Palestine in 2006 Israel and the Western powers
have deprived the Palestinian Authority of 50 of
its budget and 25 of international aid. Israel
is also withholding tax revenue collected from
Palestinians. As a consequence of the withdrawal
and withholding of funds public workers salaries
can no longer be paid and basic health,
sanitation and education services are in collapse.

Support
This is freedom and security? Women in Black
have a different view of security. The security
women need and seek is freedom from violence
certainty of basic resources water, food,
shelter, health care access to education and
being sure of a livelihood. Militarism is the
very opposite of security.

MAKE BRIDGES, NOT BOMBS
Women in Black. is an international network of
feminists opposed to war, militarism and other
kinds of violence who work for peace and justice.
We call for an end to violence, whether its
purpose is state power, economic exploitation or
personal control. We work to build bridges in
situations of conflict, and choose non-violence
in our actions. We believe a more respectful,
just, co-operative and caring way of life is
possible.
