Transfer students
  • A transfer student is one who previously attended
    another regional accredited college or university
    (regardless of how long ago)
  • You must have all official college transcripts
    mailed from the institution attended directly to
    SLCC.
  • Transcript request forms can be found on the
    SLCCs web site.

Developmental Studies

    required to take semester-length developmental
    courses in English, Math and Reading. Any
    student placing in more than one developmental
    course is required to take the College Success
    Seminar Class during the first semester of
    enrollment.

When Classes Begin
  • Syllabus
  • A course syllabus should be provided by each
    instructor which includes their contact
    information, necessary books and supplies, course
    description and other important information
    regarding the class.
  • Books
  • SLCC offers onsite or online shopping (click
    here) or Call 337-521-8930 for specific campus
    hours or additional information.
  • Attendance
  • Class attendance is regarded as an obligation as
    well as a privilege, and all students are
    expected to attend regularly and punctually all
    classes in which they are enrolled. Faculty
    members shall develop and implement their own
    absence policies. The determination of what
    constitutes excessive absences rest with the
    instructor, but must not be less than the college
    minimum of 10 of the total class meetings.

Student Schedule Changes
  • The college designates a period (drop/add) during
    which a student may make schedule changes.
    Specific dates and procedures are listed in the
    current schedule of classes.
  • Students are responsible for officially dropping
    courses it is not the responsibility of
    instructors to drop students for non attendance.
  • Drop/Add
  • During this period, students may drop/add classes
    only within the first
  • 4 days of a Spring or Fall Semester and the
    first 2 days of a summer semester.
  • NOTE Dropping a course after the drop/add
    period will not reduce the students financial
    obligation to the college and may affect
    eligibility for continued financial aid.
  • Dropping with a grade of w or Resignation
  • As of the 5th day of a Fall/Spring Semester and
    the 3rd day of a summer semester, a student may
    continue to drop one or more classes or drop all
    classes (resignation) and will receive a grade of
    a w. Students must initiate the process by
    meeting with their advisor and submitting the
    appropriate form to the Registrars office in
    accordance with dates printed in the schedule of
    classes. See last day to drop with a grade of
    w.
  • Students who stop attending courses without
    officially dropping/resigning may receive failing
    grades in those courses.

Keeping your Grades up
  • Probation
  • Students are required to maintain a cumulative
    2.0 grade point
  • average each semester. If a students falls
    below the minimum required GPA, they will be
    placed on academic probation for the next
    semester.
  • Suspension
  • A student on academic probation will be suspended
    from the college at the conclusion of any
    semester or summer semester that they fail to
    earn a semester grade point average of 2.0.
  • For the 1st academic suspension, the period of
    suspension is 1 regular semester for subsequent
    suspensions, it is 1 calendar year. If suspended
    from a 4 year university a student may not attend
    any other college or university.
  • Exception ULL suspended students
  • Must first meet with their College Dean at ULL
    and obtain an approved academic appeal.
  • Upon approval, a formal notice will be sent
    directly from ULL to SLCCs Registrar.
  • Once SLCCs Registrar has received the notice,
    you may schedule an appointment to meet with an
    SLCC advisor to schedule classes.
  • Academic Amnesty
  • A student who interrupted their college education
    for a minimum of 3 years may apply for academic
    amnesty upon admission to SLCC. Academic Amnesty
    effectively wipes out ones prior academic record
    in those courses and grades from the earlier
    record are not counted in the students degree
    program. It therefore gives a student the
    opportunity to begin a fresh academic career.

FERPA FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS PRIVACY ACT
  • South Louisiana Community College is bound by
    FERPA requirements.
  • WHAT IS FERPA (Family Educational Rights
    Privacy Act)?
  • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of
    1974, as amended (also sometimes referred to as
    the Buckley Amendment), is a federal law
    regarding the privacy of student records and the
    obligations of the institution, primarily in the
    areas of release of the records and the access
    provided to these records. Any educational
    institution that receives funds under any program
    administered by the U.S. Secretary of Education
    is bound by FERPA requirements. Institutions that
    fail to comply with FERPA may have funds
    administered by the Secretary of Education
    withheld.
  • FERPA for Parents
  • Grades, progress reports, exams
  • Such things as progress in a course, deficiencies
    in a subject area, scores and grades on papers,
    exams, etc. are all examples of personally
    identifiable information that make up part of the
    student's education record.
  • This information is protected under FERPA and
    parents may not have access unless the student
    has provided written authorization that
    specifically identifies what information may be
    released to the parent(s).
  • Access to student records
  • At the postsecondary level, parents have no
    inherent rights to access or inspect their son or
    daughter's education records.
  • This right is limited solely to the student.
  • At SLCC, records may be released to parents only
    if they have been given a written release by the
    student or in compliance with a subpoena.

Student Organizations
  • Student Government Association (SGA)
  • The organization provides for the students of
    this institution a representative body that will
    hear and appropriately act on legitimate concerns
    expressed by the student body. No one will be
    denied admission to this body because of sex,
    race, ethnicity, religious preferences, sexual
    orientation, or physical conditions.
  • SLCC Honor Society
  • Beta Xi Omega is the local chapter of the Phi
    Theta Kappa. This organization is an honor
    society which is committed to excellence in
    education, to good character, and to service.
    Any student full or part time, who has completed
    12 credit hours at SLCC is eligible for
    membership provided they meet a GPA of 3.0 and

  • Criminal Justice Association
  • Kappa Alpha Sigma is the local chapter of the
    Lambda Alpha Epsilon, the national chapter of the
    American Criminal Justice Association. This
    organization is open to all majors. The
    organization seeks to improve criminal justice
    through educational activities, promotes
    awareness of criminal justice issues, promotes
    high standards of ethical conduct and provides a
    unified voice for professionals and students in

Parking Student IDs
  • Parking
  • All vehicles parking at SLCC require parking
    permits and must be legally registered and
    insured in accordance with state law. Parking
    permits are issued to Faculty, Staff, and
    students during the first week of each semester.
    Fall permits are valid during the following
    Spring and Summer semesters.
  • Maximum speed is 10mph on all campus/site roads,
    drives and parking lots.
  • Student/General Parking is allowed only in
    designated student locations (see maps on
    following slides). Student parking is not allowed
    in Faculty/Staff parking areas.
  • Failure to comply with parking regulations may
    result in immobilizing, towing and/or loss of
    vehicle privileges on any or all campuses.

    337-373-0185, New Iberia.

  • During the first week of each semester, students
    will be notified as to the date and time that ID

Safety at SLCC
  • SLCC strives to provide safe and secure
    facilities and environments for all students,
    faculty and staff in support of its mission.
    Resources used to assist in maintaining a safe
    environment are City and Parish law enforcement
    and Emergency Response Agencies, contract
    Security Services, cameras and alarm systems.

    exterior ash trays on the top of trash cans.
