Title: Biodiesel in Vermont: Reliable, Renewable

1
Biodiesel in Vermont Reliable, Renewable
Available October 19, 2006 Renewable Energy
Vermont Annual Conference Presented by Gary
Winslow, BioQuantum, Inc.
2
Our Mission
  • The Vermont Biofuels Association (VBA) is
dedicated to increasing the demand and capacity
for locally produced biodiesel and other
agriculturally based fuels, and to serve as a
resource for the development of a sustainable
    biofuels industry in Vermont.

3
What Is Biodiesel?
  • A renewable, biodegradable, mono alkyl ester
    combustible liquid fuel
  • Derived from vegetable oil or animal fat
  • Typically soy oil, canola, yellow grease and
    fats
  • Meets ASTM specification D6751 for biodiesel fuel
    (B100)
  • Blend stock for distillate fuels
  • Its NOT the same as vegetable oil

4
Terminology
  • Biodiesel is the pure, or 100 percent, biodiesel
fuel. It is commonly referred to as B100 or
    neat biodiesel.
  • A biodiesel blend is B100 blended with petroleum
diesel. Biodiesel blends are referred to as BXX,
where XX indicates the percentage of biodiesel
    in the blend (by volume).

5
Biodiesel Applications
  • Biodiesel burns in any compression ignition
engine or equipment that burns diesel
  • Even pure B100
  • Typically B20 (20 bio) is most popular
  • Used to achieve significant improvements in air
    quality
  • Blended with No2 oil in commercial and
    residential equipment
  • Other blends are also used…Other applications

6
How Does Biodiesel Perform?
  • 125,000 Btu/gallon
  • (compared to 132,000 Btu Low Sulfur diesel)
  • Higher cetane number than LS diesel
  • (46 to 52 compared to 40-45)
  • Biodiesel is a lubricity agent (2 for ULSD)
  • Blends up to B20 are performing as well as LS
diesel and 2 oil in tests

7
Biodiesel and Cold Weather Operation
  • Biodiesel has a higher cloud point than
    petrodiesel
  • Around 40F B100 begins to cloud
  • A blend of B20 using winterized LS diesel is good
    to minus 20F before cloud
  • Cold flow additives or 1 diesel are also
    effective in B20 blends

8
B20 Material Compatibility
  • B20 or lower blends minimize most issues
    associated with material compatibility
  • Over the last 10 years gt B20 is compatible with
    elastomers in diesel fuel systems
  • Filter clogging can occur, especially with older
    systems, but only during transition

9
Biodiesel and Warranties
  • Most major engine companies have stated the use
of blends up to B20 will not void their parts and
    workmanship warranties.
  • This includes blends below 20 biodiesel
  • Check NBB website www.biodiesel.org
  • It is anticipated that the entire industry will
incorporate the ASTM biodiesel standard (B20)
    into their owner's manuals

10
Why Use Biodiesel?
  • Extends Petroleum Supply
  • Reduction in Imported Petroleum Renewable
  • Lower Emissions
  • Reduction in Most Regulated Pollutants
  • Reduction in Greenhouse Gases
  • Jobs and Energy Self-Sufficiency in Rural Areas

    for snow making
  • Middlebury College
  • Town of Hartford B20 for School Buses and Town
    Trucks
  • Other Towns Danville, Norwich, Marlborough,
Brattleboro, and the list is growing

17
Fuel Dealers
  • Vermont's fuel suppliers selling biodiesel
    blends
  • Jack F. Corse, Inc.
  • Evans Group
  • Champlain Oil
  • Patterson Fuels
  • Gillespie Fuels
  • Calkins Oil Co
  • Ten others and
  • growing…

18
Biodiesel in the U.S.
  • 75 million gallons were produced sold last year
    (3x the year before)
  • Over 45 million miles have been logged in the USA
  • More than 500 Commercial and Govt fleets are
    using B20
  • B20 20 less oil from countries that dont like
    us

19
Current Pricing
  • Varies, but around 2.91 for on-road B100
  • Around 2.55 for B100 for heating (if you can get
    it)
  • Around 0 to 5 cent per gallon margin over diesel
    market for B20
  • Around 0 to 10 cent per gallon margin over diesel
    market price for B20

20
Efficiency, Not Just Fuel Replacement
  • Replacing our current level of energy consumption
with biodiesel is not the solution to high energy
prices, air quality concerns or supply jitters
  • Choose more fuel efficient vehicles and heating
    equipment
  • Use voluntary measures (or look forward to
    mandates)

21
Says Who?
  • …Our best options for meeting future energy
requirements are energy efficiency and renewable
sources. Energy efficiency is the least
    expensive, most readily available, and
environmentally friendly way to stretch our
current energy supplies. For efficiency and
renewables, the intangible and hard to quantify
benefits -- such as reduced pollution and
increased security -- yield indisputable economic
    value.

U.S. Army Installations. U.S. Army Corps of
    Engineers September 2005

22
Announcement
  • Vermont Biodiesel Project has completed its
final report on its two year market development
initiative. Reports are available at the VBA
    table today.
