Turkish Students in the USA
  • In academic year 2007/08, there were 12,030
students from Turkey studying in the United
States (up 4.6 from the previous year). Turkey
is the eighth-leading place of origin for
students in the United States and one of only
four non-Asian countries among the top ten
    senders.
  • Academic Level. The majority of Turkish students
study at the graduate level. In 2007/08, their
    breakdown was as follows

Higher Education in Turkey
  • Turkeys Higher Education system is very similar
    to the US
  • 4-year undergraduate, 2-year Masters, and
    doctoral programs 3 years
  • One major difference is that an Associates Degree
    is essentially a terminal degree
  • Nearly impossible to transfer from a 2-year
    program into a 4-year program
  • University entrance exam determines placement in
    program
  • 1.64 million students took the placement exam in
    June 2008
  • Only around 25 of students in any given year are
able to be placed in a university program due to
    lack of capacity
  • There are 2,291,762 students in Higher Education
    in Turkey

4
Universities in Turkey
  • Higher Education in Turkey is overseen by the
    Higher Education Council (YOK)
  • YOK determines whether degrees from foreign
    universities are acceptable in Turkey
  • Particularly important for males (determines
length of military service) and those wishing to
    work in the Civil Service
  • 93 Public universities and 36 Foundation
    (private) universities
  • Tuition at public universities is minimal
    (possibly up to 1,000)
  • Tuition at foundation universities can range from
    4,000 to upwards of 20,000
