Title: HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM

1
HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM
  • Chapter 64

2
I. Introduction
  • 1. Spirit Indwelling Spirit dwells in believer
    after conversion forever not
    temporarily.
  • 2. Spirit Sealing Spirit seals believer at
    conversion forever for eternal security
    personal purity.
  • 3. Spirit Baptizing

3
II. Spirit Baptizing - Factoids
  • 1. First predicted by John the Baptist in Matt
    311 -
  • I baptize you with water for repentance. But
after me will come one who is more powerful than
I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
  • 2. Foretold by Jesus Christ after his
    resurrection in Acts 15
  • For John baptized with water, but in a few days
you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

4
III. What does Holy Spirit Baptism Do?
  • 1. It Joins Us to the Body of Christ
  • a. Romans 64
  • We were therefore buried with him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ
was raised from the dead through the glory of
the Father, we too may live a new life.
  • b. Being in his body means we are raised with
    Him to newness in life.
  • c. 1 Corinthians 1213
  • For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one
body whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free and
we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

5
III. What does Holy Spirit Baptism Do?
  • 2. It Actualizes our Co-crucifixion with Christ
  • a. Colossians 212
  • having been buried with him in baptism and
raised with him through your faith in the power
of God, who raised him from the dead.
  • b. We associate ourselves with Christs death,
burial, and resurrection which creates the basis
for realizing our separation from sin and our
    newness of life.

6
IV. Spirit Baptizing Characteristics
  • 1. Only Operative in this Dispensation
  • a. Dispensation - It is a method or way of
dividing, not God, but His Word, so that one
receives a clear understanding of God's dealings
    with man over the millennia.
  • b. 7 Dispensations
  • 1. Innocence - From the creation of man until
    the Fall
  • 2. Conscience, or Moral Responsibility - From
    the Fall until the flood
  • 3. Human Government - From the Flood until the
    call of Abram
  • 4. Promise - From the call of Abram until the
    Exodus
  • 5. Law - From Sinai until Christ
  • 6. Grace - From Pentecost until the Rapture
  • 7. Kingdom - From the Rapture until the eternal
    state

7
IV. Spirit Baptizing Characteristics
  • c. We are in the Dispensation or Age of Grace
  • d. O.T. has no prediction of baptism and Jesus
only points it out to happen on Pentecost (Acts
    15)
  • e. Peter calls the coming of Holy Spirit at
Pentecost the beginning in Acts 1115-16
  • As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on
them as he had come on us at the beginning.

8
IV. Spirit Baptizing Characteristics
  • 2. Experienced by All Believers in this
    Dispensation. 3 Evidences
  • a. 1 Corinthians 1213
  • For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one
body whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free and we
were all given the one Spirit to drink.
  • 1. Shows different conditions of believers in
Corinth, carnality will not make us miss the Holy
    Spirit baptism

9
IV. Spirit Baptizing Characteristics
  • b. Nowhere in the Scripture is there a single
exhortation for anyone to be baptized with the
Spirit. This indicates all believers have
    experienced this ministry.
  • c. Ephesians 4 4-6
  • There is one body and one Spirit just as you
were called to one hope when you were called one
Lord, one faith, one baptism one God and Father
of all, who is over all and through all and in
    all.
  • 1. If one baptism refers to Holy Spirit
baptism, then those who have one Lord, one
faith, have experienced the one baptism.

10
IV. Spirit Baptizing Characteristics
  • 3. It Occurs at Salvation and Is Not Repeated
    Thereafter
  • a. Can an out-of-the-body believer exist? If
Holy Spirit baptism did not occur at salvation
there would exist believers who were saved but do
not belong to the body of Christ.
  • b. Can a believer be detached from the body of
Christ? Repetition of Holy Spirit baptism would
only be needed if a believer were detached from
the body of Christ and needed to be rejoined.

11
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • 1. Unclear conception of the Body of Christ.
  • a. Why would the Spirit need to Baptize if we
are the children of Abraham and have repented of
our sins through the ministry of John the Baptist
and Jesus ministry on this earth? Dont we
belong to this body when we are converted?
  • b. Here the body is confused as being started
since Abraham or through the repentance of sins
    ministry.
  • c. If one recognizes that the body is the work
of God started at Pentecost, then the necessity
of baptizing people into that body is clear.

12
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • 2. Overemphasis on water baptism
  • a. Sometimes the truth of Spirit baptism is lost
when water and Spirit baptism are not
    distinguished.
  • b. Early theologians believed that the baptism
of the Spirit as the baptism into the local
church through the action of water baptism. D.L.
Moody said that God imparts the
Spirit in (water) baptism. This is wrong.

13
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • 3. Charismatic denominations associate Spirit
baptism with the second blessing or experience
    of tongues.
  • 4. Baptism of Spirit and filling of the Spirit
    are not distinguished.
  • a. Many believed in filling-baptism happened
following conversion and not to all believers.
They considered baptism as an infilling for
special power but did not necessarily involve
    speaking in tongues.
  • b. Great men like R.A. Torrey and D.L. Moody
    were unclear in this area.

14
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • 5. The Doctrine of Two Baptisms
  • a. 1 Corinthians 1213
  • For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one
body whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free and we
were all given the one Spirit to drink.

15
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • b. Since Word of God shows all believers are
baptized by the Spirit, contemporary teachers
want to associate special baptism for power or
second blessing by stating there are two Spirit
    baptisms.
  • 1. First being the Spirit baptism that is
accomplished by the Spirit joining a believer to
    Christ.
  • 2. Second by Christ to place people in the
    Spirit for experiences of power.
  • 3. The first occurs at conversion and results in
a position. The second occurs later and can be
    repeated for power.
  • 4. The first doesnt require speaking of
    tongues, the second does.

16
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • c. N.T. uses the phrase to baptize with, in, or
by the Spirit only 7 times
  • 1. Matt 311 - He will baptize you with the Holy
    Spirit and with fire.
  • 2. Mark 18 - I baptize you with water, but he
will baptize you with the Holy
    Spirit.
  • 3. Luke 316 - He will baptize you with the Holy
    Spirit and with fire.
  • 4. John 133 - The man on whom you see the
    Spirit come down and
    remain is he who will
    baptize with the Holy Spirit.
  • 5. Acts 15 - For John baptized with water, but
in a few days you will be baptized
    with the Holy Spirit.
  • 6. Acts 1116 - John baptized with water, but
    you will be baptized
    with the Holy Spirit.
  • 7. 1 Cor. 1213 - For we were all baptized by
    one Spirit into one body

17
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • d. These verses can be put into three categories.
  • 1. Predictions in the Gospels Christ is the
baptizer, Spirit is sphere in which people were
    baptized.
  • 2. The pointing ahead and back to the Pentecost
in Acts - Spirit is agent in baptizing and body
of Christ is the sphere in which people were
    baptized
  • 3. The doctrinal explanation in 1 Corinthians
Spirit is agent in baptizing and body of Christ
is the sphere in which people were baptized.
  • 4. Both Christ and Holy Spirit are the agents
    and spheres.
  • 5. Christ is the Ultimate Agent, Spirit is the
intermediate agent. Clearly the body of Christ
    and Spirit are distinct.
  • 6. Conclusion Similar to the Spirits work in
sealing. He is the agent who seals and in
    which we are sealed.

18
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • e. Charismatic denominations view the references
in the Gospels as two separate entities.
  • 1. In Acts they say that Christ is the Agent and
the Spirit is the sphere which is baptism in the
Spirit and thus power is attained.
  • 2. They say Corinthians shows the Spirit as the
Agent and Christ as the sphere which is baptism
    by the Spirit.
  • 3. So they say all believers are baptized by the
Spirit but not all have experienced baptism in
    the Spirit.

19
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • f. Utradispensationalism uses this same argument
to say there were two churches in the Acts
    period.
  • 1. The Jewish church or Petrine church existed
from Pentecost to Paul and received power by the
    baptism in the Spirit.
  • 2. The Pauline, or body, church existed from
church on and is formed by the baptism by the
    Spirit.

20
V. Confusion concerning Spirits Baptizing
  • g. To see two agents is biblical and it is normal
to see different persons of the trinity be
    involved in the same work.
  • 1. Acts 232 33
  • God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are
all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right
hand of God, he has received from the Father the
promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what
    you now see and hear.
  • 2. It is Christs work through the agency of the
Spirits ministry to join those who believe to
    the church or His body.
