Jupiter and Earth

  • In Roman mythology, Jupiter (Iuppiter in Latin)
held the same role as Zeus in the Greek pantheon.
He was called Juppiter Optimus Maximus Soter
(Jupiter Best, Greatest, Saviour) as the patron
deity of the Roman state, in charge of laws and
social order. He was the chief god of the
    Capitoline Triad

Jupiter's Rings
  • Jupiter has rings like Saturn's, but much fainter
and smaller. They were totally unexpected and
were only discovered when two of the Voyagers and
1 scientist insisted that after travelling 1
billion km it was at least worth a quick look to
see if any rings might be present. Everyone else
thought that the chance of finding anything was
0!!! You can only see them on an infra-red camera.

Great Red Spot
  • best known feature on Jupiter is the Great Red
spot a persistent storm located 22 south of the
equator that is larger than Earth. It has lasted
from at least 1831and possibly since 1665.

Can you see the great red spot?

Few more amazing facts
  • The earth could fit in Jupiter 13 times
  • A hurricane has been going on for 300 years
  • Jupiter (a.k.a. Jove Greek Zeus) was the King of
the Gods, the ruler of Olympus and the patron of
the Roman state. Zeus was the son of Cronus
    (Saturn).

SPOTTING JUPITER FROM THE EARTH
  • Jupiter is one of the easiest planets to spot
from the Earth. Though Venus is brighter, Jupiter
is further from the Sun, so it's visible long
after the Sun and Venus have set. Other than the
    Moon,

FUN History!!!
  • The Romans named the planet Jupiter after their
king of the gods - a fortunate coincidence since
they couldn't possibly have known that Jupiter is
the largest planet in the Solar System.
