    understand the importance of family beliefs,
    customs, language, and traditions.
  • Purpose for presentation to present information
    for my class that will help them appreciate all
    humans and their different traditions and customs.

Appreciating Customs and Traditions of all
People
  • Mrs. Anciras First Grade Class

We are different, but we share a lot in common!
  • America is a diverse country.
  • This means that, in America, we can find all
    sorts of people. We will find people who believe
    in different religions. Many people celebrate
    holidays that some of us never knew took place!
    Others may have very special traditions! We are
    going to discuss some interesting customs and
    traditions that we may find in America and around
    the world!

Chinese New Year
  • This is celebrated on February 12th.
  • People who celebrate wear something red on this
    day. This color is thought to scare away evil
    spirits.
  • This is a time when the Chinese clean their
    houses really well to get rid of bad luck from
    the past year.
  • The celebrations bring a message of peace and
    happiness for families and close friends.

Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos
  • In Mexico, this is a day to remember loved ones
    who have passed away.
  • It is usually celebrated during the first two
    days of November.
  • Families visit graves and bring favorite items
    that these relatives enjoyed.
  • This day includes all of the community.
  • These are beautiful days filled with memories.

Hanukkah
  • Jewish families celebrate Hanukkah during the
    month of December.
  • This lasts eight days.
  • A candle is lit for each day. A menorah holds
    all eight candles.
  • Each time a candle is lit, the family prays.
  • During Hanukkah, Jewish children receive presents
    everyday!

Japanese Birthday Hat
  • In Japan, a red hat is part of a tradition.
  • When a man in your family turns sixty-one years
    old, he is given a special red hat.
  • This birthday hat symbolizes wishes for a Happy
    Birthday and many more to come!

Kwanzaa
  • This is a holiday celebrated by many
    African-Americans.
  • It takes place from December 26 to January 1.
  • During this time, families join together to
    remember the Way of Life principles.
  • Kwanzaa emphasizes unity in African-American
    families.

Maypole Dance on May Day
  • This celebration can be found throughout Europe
    and also in America.
  • It is a dance to celebrate May Day or May 1st.
  • Adults and children wrap ribbons or crepe paper
    around a pole.
  • When they do this, there is an a order to how
    they dance.
  • By the end of the dance, the pole is completely
    wrapped. It looks beautiful and colorful!

Native American Sand Pictures
  • Native American Medicine Men create colorful sand
    pictures on the ground.
  • They use colored sand to make these pictures when
    someone in their tribe is sick.
  • Many Native Americans believe that good spirits
    will see these pictures and help the sick feel
    better.

Plum Pudding Surprise
  • In England, it is a tradition to eat plum pudding
    during Christmas time.
  • You may find a surprise when you eat it!
  • If you find a ring, you will be married.
  • If you find a button, you will be a bachelor (a
    man who is not married).
  • If you find a thimble, you will be an old maid (a
    woman who is not married).
  • What do you think you would find?
