Aim
  • To obtain a snapshot of the diabetes workforce in
    New Zealand
  • To determine the regional variation in diabetes
    workforce throughout New Zealand

3
Methods

  • Sent to DHB CEOs requesting information under
    the OIA
  • All DHBs eventually responded

    0.8FTE per 100,000 population
  • Based on data from Federation of the Royal
Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.
Census of consultant physicians in the UK, 2006.
Data and commentary. Suffolk Lavenham Press,
    2007.

of diabetes specialist physician services between
    DHB's.
  • The national mean is 0.35 FTE Diabetes Specialist
    Physicians per 100,000 population.
  • The total Diabetes Specialist Physician FTE for
    New Zealand is 14.5
  • No DHB has a Diabetes Specialist Physician
service that is at or above that recommended by
the Federation of the Royal Colleges of
    Physicians of the United Kingdom.
  • New Zealand requires 19.4 more Diabetes
Specialist Physician FTE's to meet recommended
    numbers.

19
Conclusions
  • There is significant regional variation in the
resources allocated to diabetes care throughout
    New Zealand
  • This raises the distinct possibility that there
    is inequity of care
  • No region currently meets the recommended FTE for
    Diabetes Physicians

20
NZSSD Recommendations
  • National consensus on the diabetes workforce
    required per 100,000 individuals
  • Variance based on ethnic mix
  • DHBs should be instructed to achieve this target
    over a certain period
  • Training of health professionals required to meet
    the need
