Title: Goal Setting

1
Goal Setting
  • TENA Committee Chair Training FY 2009

2
3 Simple Principals
  • Goals must be realistic, measurable and outcome
    focused
  • Goals must be measurable, including any financial
    impact
  • Goals must have a time frame for completion

3
Three Parts of a goal
  • Goal Statement
  • What is the measurement criteria?
  • What is the outcome?

4
Goal Statement
  • It should be simple and concise
  • Define exactly what you want to achieve
  • What actions are needed to complete the goal?
  • What is the financial impact of the goal

5
Measurable
  • Set clear guidelines for how you are going to
    measure completion of the goal.
  • You need to be able to say that the goal has been
    met.

6
Outcome
  • All goals should have an outcome statement
  • What will we accomplish when the goal is
    completed?
  • What impact does it have?
  • How does it affect the Strategic Plan?

7
Time Frame
  • Be realistic
  • Set time frame for completion of each goal and
    report progress

8
Financial Impact
  • Every Committee Chair needs to prepare a budget
  • Remember that each Committee Chair is allotted a
    set amount for travel.
  • Currently 450.00 per year
  • Consider what your goals may cost, and most
importantly what impact that they could have on
the budget for income and/or expense.
  • Remember RFI (Return for Investment)
  • RFI does not always mean that it will bring
    income to the State Chapter
  • RFI can also include positive affects for the
    State Chapter
  • Example Spend money that will provide education
    to our membership
  • We need to explain why we are allocating funds

9
From Idea to Goal
  • First of all Think BIG
  • Gather ideas, suggestions, wishes and dreams.
  • Prioritize
  • How do they fit in the Strategic Plan?
  • How do they impact the membership.
  • Do they affect Patient Care and Patient Outcomes?
  • What is most important?
  • Is there a Financial impact for this goal?

10
Pick the Best
  • Pick the best two to three goals from the list
  • Look at the list
  • What is the best investment of your time or funds
    that will impact more people?
  • Think of it as a to do list
  • A to do list should be short, and only include
the major things that you really want to achieve
  • What are the most important things that you need
    to achieve

11
Putting Goals in Order
  • The first goal should be selected as something
that can be attained quickly and easily
  • Sounds crazy, but if you can get the first goal
completed quickly, the rest of the list becomes
    easier
  • Choose a winner to start your list
  • Try to have the first goal achieved in the first
    quarter
  • Most difficult/challenging goal should be
    scheduled in the last quarter

12
