Title: Case Study the development of IT teaching and learning in the curriculum

1
Case Study - the development of IT teaching and
learning in the curriculum
  • It always seems that we are starting back at
    square one.
  • Development has been patchy. I cant in all
honesty, say that all the children are having a
    consistent experience in IT.
  • IT development is difficult and is often led by
    enthusiasm rather than detailed planning.

2
Reasons
  • the dependence on the skills and expertise of an
individual enthusiast or leader - lost if that
    person leaves the school
  • lack of teacher self-confidence - hard gained but
    soon lost
  • the difficulty in getting the correct balance
between the development of teacher skill and
    curriculum implementation.

3
Effective learning in IT would result in
  • pupils asking more questions and offering
hypotheses because IT makes it easier to answer
    or explore them
  • pupils showing a willingness to look for answers
because IT makes information retrieval, data
    analysis and modelling easier
  • pupils showing a willingness to take risks
because IT allows them to correct errors and/or
    start again
  • pupils using and choosing a wider range of
resources and media because IT facilitates
    organisation and retrieval

4
Effective learning in IT would result in
  • pupils showing an ability to learn by iteration
rather than through one single attempt, because
IT makes experimentation faster and easier
  • pupils showing better motivation towards their
work because IT makes possible the
    capture/retrieval and analysis of real
information and allows pupils to achieve
high-quality presentation and to design systems
    which perform real tasks
  • pupils collaborating on tasks to produce
outcomes and using IT to facilitate such
    collaboration

5
Effective learning in IT would result in
  • pupils becoming more autonomous because IT offers
them tools they can control to perform jobs and
    tasks for them.

6
Effective teaching in IT would demonstrate that
  • Individual lesson planning takes account of
schools agreed plan for the development of IT
    capability
  • lesson objectives identify specific opportunities
    for developing IT capability
  • teachers take pupils prior experience with IT
(gained in and out of school) into account when
    planning lesson
  • activities have built-in differentiation so that
the tasks set match the needs and abilities of
    pupils
  • IT is used to enhance both teaching and learning
in a range of subject contexts

7
Effective teaching in IT would demonstrate that
  • teachers use the IT expertise of colleagues to
develop their own learning and that of their
    pupils
  • Teachers consciously find ways to use pupils own
IT expertise to develop other pupils learning
  • available support, such as technician or IT
Special Educational Needs specialists, is used by
    the teacher to best effect
  • teachers use the available expertise of parents
and other members of the community to enrich the
    IT use in the classroom.
