630.4 Evaluation shall be based upon an analysis
of the documented evidence presented.
  • Personnel Action File (PAF) in Deans office
    inspect it frequently
  • Nothing goes in PAF without notice to faculty
    member criticism must be in writing and copied
    to candidate, with opportunity to comment/rebut
  • Professional Information File (PIF) created by
    faculty member combined with PAF during
    consideration season your selling tool

Meet the Written Criteria
  • CSU/CFA Contract (Collective Bargaining
    Agreement, MOU) provides the foundation
  • CSUN Administrative Manual Section 600 has CSUNs
    specific rules copy to each faculty member
    annually
  • College and/or Department has its own specific
    criteria in writing get a copy
  • Your PIF should show how you meet the criteria

Know your Judges, 1
  • Department Personnel Committee tenured
    colleagues senior to you, likely to know you and
    your discipline better than most
  • Department Chair should be your mentor
  • College Personnel Committee senior colleagues,
    may not be acquainted with your discipline
  • Dean first administrator to review your file

Know your Judges, 2
  • Personnel Planning and Review Committee (PPR)
    senior faculty from all colleges, library, and
    counseling not likely to know you or your
    discipline reviews your file only if previous
    reviews not in positive agreement
  • Provost deputized by President to make final RTP
    decisions

Probationary Period
  • First year learn the ropes, get your feet wet
  • Second year present PIF for retention and
    again each year until tenured
  • Sixth year normally present PIF for tenure and
    promotion to Associate Professor
  • After five years as Associate present PIF for
    promotion to Professor
  • Original appointment may include years toward
    tenure early tenure rare no tenure if not
    promotable

  • All assertions substantiated with clear evidence,
    e.g. copies of papers, conference programs
  • Clear references explained for the benefit of
    reviewers outside your discipline
  • Teaching is primary, but all criteria must be met
    research is easier to document and to judge
    than teaching or service

  • Be particularly careful about publications
    submitted is not accepted, accepted is not
    published document the work and the state of
    acceptance. If a piece has been re-worked for
    new submission, make that clear.
    Double-dipping can hurt you.
  • Prepare a Table of Contents for your PIF to go in
    your PAF. It should NOT look like your resume!

Spiff your PIF, 4
  • Presentation is important. You are being judged
    ONLY by the documented record submitted. Dont
    overload it with trivia.
  • Watch mechanics reviewers may have a hard time
    seeing academic quality through errors of
    spelling and grammar. Swap proofreading services
    with a colleague.
  • Tell your reviewers what to look for in an
    introductory narrative (executive summary).

  • Learn the system formal and informal
  • Know colleagues, chair -- socialize
  • Make yourself known
  • Find advisor/mentor
  • Know administrators
  • Be informed read your mail
  • Learn what resources are available, e.g. CELT,
    Library
  • Manage time effectively pace self
  • Maintain records
  • Be above reproach in relationships, esp. with
    students
  • Join CFA!

  • Your colleagues have every expectation that you
    will succeed here everyone who has the right
    stuff will be tenured theres no quota or
    limit.
