4Objectives of the MAS
- This important and mandatory survey provides
information on the nature, extent, and trends in
alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by students
in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 throughout the state of
Maryland. - Survey results assist in program planning and
implementation and have an important role to play
in decisions affecting all students statewide.
5Objectives of the MAS
- Provides information about protective factors
- Substance Abuse Knowledge
- Perceived Risks of Substance Use,
- Parenting Practices,
- Influences of Parents and Friends, and
- Resistance to Peer Pressure to Use Drugs.

6Sampling
- A sample of schools was selected based on its
6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grade enrollment within
the school system. - Schools with greater enrollment in 6th, 8th, 10th
and 12th grades were more likely to be selected
for the MAS. - Home and hospital schools and evening schools
were eliminated from the sample, as were schools
with fewer than 10 students in the target grades.

- MAS findings are valid, reliable, and
representative because of - School and class-level sampling

and state estimates - Class selection process for administration is

- Significant decreases in reported use of the
gateway substances for eighth grade youth
between 2002 and 2004. Gateway is defined as
the substances first typically tried by
pre-teens.

substances within the last 30 days for tenth
grade youth between 2002 and 2004.

- Substantial Decreases in reported substance use
within the last 30 days among twelfth grade youth
between the 2002 and 2004 survey.
28- Those youth who reporting use of cigarettes,
alcohol and/or other drugs continue to believe
that their friends would think it is O.K. to use
those substances. The rate is much lower for
those reporting non-use of substances. - Youth that report using cigarettes, beer, and
alcohol believe to a greater extent that their
parents would think it is O.K. for them to use
those substances. The youth reporting non-use
believe their parents would not think it is O.K.
to use the various drugs. - The youth of Harford County continue to score
high in their knowledge of drug-related content
information. - Harford County youth in grades six, eight, ten
and twelve continue to report that they have been
taught to say no to drug use and they know the
dangers of substance use. - Youth in grades six, eight, ten and twelve, who
report using cigarettes, alcohol and/or other
drugs report being offered tobacco, alcohol and
other drugs outside of school and on school
grounds. The percentages are considerably smaller
for youth reporting non-use. - Larger percentages of non-users than users
report - Eating together daily with their families.
- That someone at home would worry about them if
they did not know where they were. - Always having an adult to talk with about
problems. - An adult always makes sure they wake up in time
for school. - Their family always does at least one activity
together weekly. - Always having an adult at home who talks about
not using alcohol and drugs. - Always have rules about the people they can be
with.
