• Discuss the technological, cultural, and
  economical changes brought about by the
  Industrial Revolution.
• Participate in an exercise replicating the
  working experience found during the Industrial
  Revolution.

The Beginning

• Began in England in the late 18th to early 19th
  Century
• Economy based on manual labor was replaced by
  industry and the development of factory work

Technology

• Began with the textile industry
• The introduction of canals, improved roads, and
  railways increased trade
• Introduction of steam power and powered machinery
• The development of factories and assembly
  line-style production

Textile Innovations

• Early 18th century British textile manufacturing
  was based on wool
• Lewis Paul and John Wyatt patented The Roller
  Spinning Machine and The Flyer and Bobbin System
  in 1764 Later known as The Spinning Jenny
• Made Textiles more even and uniform

Steam Engine

• Thomas Savery patented the first steam engine in
  London, 1698
• The first successful machine was the atmospheric
  engine, invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712
• Primarily used in coal mining

• 1800 there were 1,454 steam engines

• John Lombes water powered silk mill was
  operational by 1721 in Derby
• In 1746, the first brass mill was working in
  Bristol, England
• Factory system was largely responsible for the
  rise of the modern city
• Manchester nicknamed Cottonopolis
