Title: The eTriage application applies evidencebased research to assist employers in returning employees to

1
The e-Triage application applies evidence-based
research to assist employers in returning
employees to the workplace after an injury or
illness, and to enhance employee retention.  The
decision support application identifies risk
factors that may affect a normal recovery and
return to work.   The application then suggests
an action plan to help the Case Manager focus on
the issues identified.  The interview design
integrates questions that screen for medical,
general health perception, social and behavioral
issues including stress and burnout.  The
progression of interview questions is determined
by responses to prior questions. The e-Triage
application evaluates the employee's responses in
real time to identify specific risk factors or
deterrents to recovery.   Depending on the
severity or specific combinations of deterrents
identified during the evaluation process,  the
application presents treatment guidelines that
summarize "best practices" as proven by
evidence-based research to resolve each
individual case.  Thank you for taking a tour
of the e-Triage system.  Please give us your
feedback by using the "Contact Us" button at the
end.

This is the view the e-Triage system presents to
you when you first log on as a registered user.
Notice there are several view options in the menu
on the left. The next screen is the view
presented by clicking the Interviews folder on
the left. It is your In Box listing all of the
interviews currently pending for you to perform.

The next several screens present a very small
sample of questions asked during the interview
with the employee. Notice that normal Internet
and Windows conventions (check boxes, drop
lists, etc.) are used, making answering questions
and navigating through the interview process
familiar for the user. The interview can be
performed by telephone with a Health Coach asking
the questions and recording the answers on line.
Alternatively, the employee can go on-line and
perform the interview directly.

The e-Triage application evaluates the
employee's responses in real time. Based on the
responses, the decision support software applies
evidence-based research to identify risk factors
that may affect an employee's otherwise normal
recovery and return to work. When the interview
is complete, e-Triage assesses the specific risk
factors identified and recommends actions for the
Case Manager to address before the company incurs
the full cost of long term disability or employee
replacement.   The recommendations include
general statements that highlight the issues and
quickly focus the Case Manager to address the
specifics of the case. The application also
presents broad treatment guidelines that
summarize best practices as proven by
evidence-based research to resolve each
individual case. In those instances where a
planned treatment has been proven to have little,
or a detrimental affect, a guideline draws the
Case Managers attention to that research, as
well. Following are some sample Case Summary
views. Identified Issues/Deterrents are listed
first. Recommendations and Guidelines are at the
bottom of the view.

To the right of each Recommendation on the Case
Summary, are spaces for the Case Manager to
record any thoughts or actions taken in response
to each specific recommendation. These Actions
Taken notes can be added to by any user with
system authority to access the specific data
(e.g., Medical, RTW) for that company,
facilitating gathering other opinions on the case
and creating a complete discussion thread
history. The next view is the same Case Summary
as displayed on one of the previous slides.
Notice that Actions Taken have been recorded in
response to specific recommendations.

In the listing of Issues and Deterrents to
Recovery, the word Details is displayed to the
right of each list item. Clicking on this link
displays a bibliography of the supporting
research studies for that list item. In the
bibliography, each list item has a Details link
that will take you to an abstract of the selected
bibliography list item. The next view is a sample
bibliographical listing, the result of clicking
Details for a specific Issue listed. The
second slide following is a sample research study
abstract, the result of clicking Details from
the bibliography.
