Introduction
  • The Department of Systems Engineering was
    founded in 1974 as one of the earliest
    departments at King Fahd University of petroleum
    and Minerals.
  • The Industrial Advisory Committee was established
    in 2004 to help the department to successfully
    accomplish its mission and to continuously
    improve the quality of its graduates so as to
    meet current and future needs of the Kingdom in
    terms of highly qualified workforce.

Industrial AdvisoryCommittee duties
  • Give suggestions and recommendations that help
    the department in developing its programs .
  • Strengthen the links and cooperation between the
    department and both the industrial and service
    institutions and create an awareness of the
    importance of this cooperation.
  • Inform both industrial and service institutions
    about the academic programs of the department and
    their effectiveness in solving their technical
    and managerial problems.
  • Link the department with its alumni
  • Encourage industrial and service institutions to
    participate in the departments training and
    educational programs.
  • Encourage industrial and service institutions to
    actively participate in summer and coop training
    programs and student projects.

Maintenance Center
  • Established in 2002
  • Its objective is to serve the need for
    maintenance planning and Control in the local
    industry.
  • It conducts research, development and
    consultation in the area of maintenance planning.
  • Long experience in the area and links to
    international Centers.

Things Done
  • Issue 1
  • Clearly define the identity of the department,
    the program, and the graduates
  • A proposal for restructuring the Systems
    Engineering program is prepared and approved by
    the University Administration. The Systems
    Engineering Department will offer two independent
    programs one in Industrial and Systems
    Engineering, and the other in Automation and
    Control Systems Engineering. Therefore, the SE
    Department graduates will be clearly identified
    as Industrial Engineers or Automation
    Engineers. The two programs will be revised
    soon with input from many sources including the
    Industrial Advisory Committee.

  • Issue 2
  • Quality of SE Graduates
  • It pertains to communication skill of SE
    graduates. The University is addressing this
    issue globally, and currently developing a skill
    development program. Students will be required
    to acquire a minimum level of different
    communication skills before graduation.
  • Regarding the lack of knowledge in Information
    Technology (IT), the department has initiated a
    course in ERP and developed a SAP Lab. The
    course is offered in the last two terms
    successfully. Other courses on Strategic
    Planning, Re-engineering, and Balance Score
    Cards are also introduced as Electives.

  • Faculty Exposure to Industry
  • The department Information Committee has been
    assigned to explore the possibility of summer
    faculty employment, including expatriate faculty,
    in local industries. The University is currently
    working on developing faculty programs with local
    industry similar to the one with Saudi Aramco.
    The expected benefits are yet to be seen in the
    near future.

  • Effectiveness of Coop. Training Program
  • The Coop. Guidelines have been revised recently
    by the department, focusing on the design
    element in Coop. projects in line with ABET
    requirement. However, the new guidelines makes
    the responsibility of Coop. students towards
    their industrial employer for cooperative work
    assignment more clear.

  • Issue 5
  • Research Interaction with Industry
  • The Department Information Committee was assigned
    to plan faculty visits to the local industry and
    explore the ways and means for strengthening the
    faculty role in solving local industrial
    problems. In this regard, a number of visits
    have already been made. Moreover, workshops like
    WISC, ERP, are organized to increase interaction
    with the industry. However, we still have to do
    more in this regard.

New Program Content(Proposal)
  • The ISE program in KFUPM adopts the systems
    approach for solving, analyzing and optimizing
    engineering systems using various IE tools. It
    focuses on quantitative methods while developing
    the basic computer and management skills.
  • Justification
  • Quantitative methods is the main strength of the
    current program with the existence of the highly
    qualified quantitative methods oriented faculty.
  • The need of the market for IE graduates with
    management and computer skills.
  • The global trend in the IE profession and IE
    academic programs.
  • The existence of the control program in the
    department.

  • Program features
  • Wide variety of electives in different areas of
    concentration.
  • More elective courses on the expense of core
    courses (relative to the current program.
  • Emphasis on modeling and design. (at least one
    core course in modeling and design in addition to
    course projects).
  • Emphasis on personal skill such as communication,
    teamwork, leadership, , etc. through course
    projects.
  • At least one core course on information system.
  • At least one core course on accounting (or
    general course on management and accounting)
  • At least one core computer control course.
  • Areas of concentration
  • In addition of a set of core courses in various
    areas students may concentrate their elective in
    one of the following areas.
  • Productivity and work improvement (work study,
    Human factors, Safety, productivity,
    Reengineering, etc. )
  • Applied Operations Research (Advanced Operations
    research, Optimization, Stochastic processes and
    Queuing, Advanced simulation, decision making, )
  • Production and Quality control (Supply chain
    management, Advanced quality control, Information
    systems, )
  • Reliability and maintenance (Reliability,
    maintenance, .)
