Title: Expanding The Notion of Links

1
Expanding The Notion of Links
  • Steven J DeRose
  • Summer Institute of Linguistics

2
System Domain
  • Research in humanities
  • CD-Word gathers a range of documents for
    biblical studies
  • Perseus gathers Classical Greek texts , images
of architecture, for pedagogy and research

3
Issues
  • Classical documents have a linguistic and a
    layout structure
  • These structures are hierarchical but they cannot
be reconciled into the same hierarchy
  • Naming schemes are used to link to pieces of
    documents

4
Issues
  • Existence of versions with no sequential or
    genetic relationship known
  • Existence of translations, documents with the
    same structure but different content

5
System Requirements
  • Ability to compare and associate different
    versions
  • Ability to coordinate simultaneous display of
    translations
  • Search, retrieval and annotation tools
  • Access to dictionaries and help finding desired
    passages

6
Taxonomy of Links
Links
Extensional
Intensional
Relational
Inclusive
Vocative
Retrieval
Implicit
Taxonomic
Sequential
Annotational
Associative
Isomorphic
7
Extensional Links
  • Relational Links Connect single locations
    together
  • The two ends are both single units
  • Associative Links Unpredictable relational
    link
  • Created on the fly and typed

8
Extensional Links
  • Annotational Links One of the ends is
    predictable
  • Represents connection from portions of a text to
    information about it
  • Should annotations be attached to every word in
    the document?

9
Extensional Links
  • Inclusion Links Connect one location to many
    target locations
  • Sequential Links Multiple ordered target
    locations (E.g. Paths)
  • Sequential Links allow a basis to present text in
    a linear form

10
Extensional Links
  • Taxonomic Links Unordered multiple target
    locations
  • Associate lists of properties with particular
    elements
  • E.g. attaching keywords, connect related groups
    of data

11
Intensional Links
  • Follow from the structure and content of the
    document
  • Usually unidirectional, may have multiple ends
  • Vocative Links invoke a document element by
    name e.g. dictionary entries

12
Intensional Links
  • Implicit Links Target name appears within the
content of the source document (E.g. Dictionary
    lookup)
  • Isomorphic Links Target name appears as element
    name in source document
  • Tie together like-named elements

13
Intensional Links
  • Retrieval Links Find their target by content
(content based) or by structure (nominal)
  • List of locations are found
  • Destination locations may change
