Title: Mobile GIS at Xcel Energy

1
Mobile GIS at Xcel Energy
  • February 7, 2008
  • Presented by
  • Tony Rude

2
Xcel Energy Who are We?
  • Fourth largest investor-owned combination
electric and natural gas energy company in the
    U.S.
  • Formed in the fall of 2000 through the merger of
Northern States Power (MN/WI) and New Century
    Energies
  • 3.3 million electric and 1.8 million gas
    customers
  • Transmission lines - 78,637 conductor miles.
    17,432 line miles
  • Distribution lines - 184,441 conductor miles
  • Pipeline - 32,333 miles

3
Poor Mans Mobile Map
  • Back office using AutoCAD or similar application,
    but NOT GEO-Referenced maps
  • Can only display a single map at a time
  • Can zoom in/out to see details
  • Implement process for pushing out map updates
  • Using for feeder maps in some locations

4
Better Mobile Mapping
  • Back office using AutoCAD or similar application,
    but have GEO-Referenced maps
  • Can display a seemless map but it may not be
    rubber sheeted and clean edged
  • Not able to perform tracing or find attributes,
but can still use GPS for displaying the proper
    map
  • Implement process for pushing out map updates
  • Build a Redline process so your crews and take
ownership in the data and integrity

5
The Best Mobile Mapping
  • Full back office GIS (like SmallWorld or ESRI)
  • When replicating to the field you want lighter
    weight data
  • Only port over what you need for viewing
  • Put power in the hands of the crews
  • Ability to run traces on the network, find
    facilities, click on attributes, highlight
valves/switches, and position the maps to a GPS
    coordinate.
  • Implement process for pushing out map updates
  • Build a Redline process so your crews and take
ownership in the data and integrity
  • Link CRS customer system and OMS Outage
    Management to GIS

6
Link to Customer System
  • Customers are tied to GIS lot centroid
  • All customer records have lat/long coordinate
  • All work orders generated use lat/long from the
customer record without looking up coordinate for
    each order

7
Link to Outage Management System
  • Leverage the electric paths created in GIS to
predict a device that has failed
  • Map dispatching allows a dispatcher to view
orders and crews on the maps
  • You can visibly track incidents as they move
    through your service territory
  • Provides data integrity validation crew sees it
    all

8
Mobile Design the Next Level
  • Allow Designers with the ability to create, and
update designs in the field without a network
    connection.
  • Eliminate dual entry by providing a
    synchronization process with Bentley Expert
    Designer and Ventyx PassPort.
  • Leverage our existing implementations and
infrastructure constructed for the Mobile Mapping
    and Expert Designer projects.
  • Use the same process if using SmallWorld or
    AutoCAD.
  • Use the same process for all job
    sizes/complexity.
